The fire in the Wyan area is now contained - thanks to all the firefighters from the NSW RFS - Northern Rivers Zone that attended today. They'll be patrolling tomorrow to make sure it's all wrapped up before the warmer weather later this week.

There's currently a fire in the Old Tenterfield Rd area near Bailey Rd (Wineshanty area). The fire is listed as Being Controlled and crews will be working there on Saturday 29 August. The fire has quietened down overnight (Friday) and is not expected to cause any issues to neighbouring properties over the weekend, however crews will be monitoring.

This weekend, the will deploy its CH-47D Chinook helicopter and a Bell 412 support aircraft to fight fires in France. This will mark the Service’s first-ever European deployment.

The aircraft will be accompanied by 24 highly skilled aerial and ground crew, and transported to France in partnership with the Australian Defence Force.

The Chinook, equipped with an 11,300-litre belly tank, has the largest payload of any firefighting helicopter in Australia. Working with the Bell 412, it is also capable of conducting waterbombing missions at night. Should it be tasked to do so in France, it will be the first time night-time waterbombing has been undertaken in the country.

Commissioner Trent Curtin says the deployment is a testament to the expertise of our aviation crews.

“We're proud to share that expertise with our international partners while strengthening the relationships that are so important when disasters occur around the world."

Our 17 RFS members have arrived safely in Boise, Idaho, as part of the 74-person Australian and New Zealand contingent supporting ongoing wildfire operations in the United States.

The team is spending today settling in before undertaking operational briefings and training tomorrow, ahead of commencing operational duties on Monday (US time).

Personnel will then be deployed to areas where they are needed most, supporting local agencies with the ongoing wildfire response.

This Sunday, more than 20 fire trucks and 100 firefighters from across the Northern Rivers will come together in Casino for the Northern Rivers District Exercise.

As we prepare for the upcoming fire season, this exercise will ensure our members are ready to respond when called upon and that our equipment is operating as it should. The day will provide realistic training opportunities to strengthen operational capability, teamwork and preparedness so we can continue to protect our communities.

While we’re preparing, we encourage everyone in our community to do the same. Now is the time to prepare your property, reduce bush fire hazards where appropriate, and ensure you have a current Bush Fire Survival Plan in place before the fire season begins.

As at 1:45pm, there are 42 bush and grass fires across NSW, with 14 not yet contained.

Fires in the Mid Coast and Tenterfield LGAs are producing smoke visible across surrounding communities. Smoke may settle in low-lying areas overnight and into the morning, before clearing as temperatures rise during the day.

While most of NSW is outside the Bush Fire Danger Period, recent warm, dry weather has led to a number of escaped pile burns. Land managers are urged to exercise caution, monitor local weather conditions, and remain with burns until they are fully extinguished.
