This information regarding the federal governments planned decision to reject the Chalumbin Windfarm (renamed Wooroora) has just been released. This followed a ridiculously lengthy fight after being denied access. Thanks to Rainforest Reserves Australia and Carolyn Emms for your persistence in obtaining this information which is CLEARLY in the public interest and should have been released when requested initially under RTI access. It has major implications for other communities fighting inappropriate developments. With the key points throughout the document having been raised in public submissions through the PER process, it shows that the public can have a win. The difficulty when up against a despicable company like Ark Energy that is prepared to lie, omit data, contradict, and go as far as to submit false claims in signed documents to the federal government is immense and unbalanced. There needs to be a thorough overhaul of the process to improve direct ministerial access for the community.

We revealed previously that Chalumbin / Wooroora was being viewed as an industry test case. Now, some in the renewable energy industry including lobbyists and chief spin artists Renew Economy are attempting to claim this development was withdrawn due to approval delays. This is despite the fact it was withdrawn after Ark was made aware it was to be rejected.

We have viewed several documents in the past week indicating there are plans underway for sectors of the industry to attempt to use Ark’s withdrawal as leverage in an orchestrated campaign seeking to to speed up the approvals process – in other words LESS environmental assessment.

The facts: 11th April 2024 Final Recommendation Report completed, and notification published. (Report not yet publicly released).

19th April 2024 Ark withdraws the development, acknowledging in their own press release (RE: environmental outcomes) "..we have to accept that the Department may have a different view."

19/20th April 2024 The Hon Ms. Plibersek states on the public record: “Ultimately I decided the effects of this project on nature are too great and could not be accommodated ..renewables have to comply with national environment laws, like all other projects.”

20th April 2024 article in The Guardian states “Proposed windfarm next to the wet tropics world heritage area in north Queensland will not go ahead after the federal government signalled it would refuse the project.”

I’d urge everyone to be vigilant for this orchestrated media manipulation and call it out. Please message us with any instances you may come across either locally or nationally. We are compiling them for further action.

While we commend commentators that have gone on the record in the last few days, we are somewhat flabbergasted it has taken three years and the withdraw of the Chalumbin / Wooroora development for them to do so.

We agree wholeheartedly with Felicity Wade and her comment draws parallels with what we have been saying since day one. "With cleared, degraded land in abundance on the Tablelands and throughout Australia, there is simply no justification for this development on this site."

Ark Energy’s orchestrated campaign of lies, omissions and deception has finally been exposed for what it was. When the Hon. Tanya Plibersek declared her intention to reject the development on unacceptable environmental grounds, Ark’s house of cards collapsed. The developers attempts to portray the site as cleared, degraded pastureland, was nationally exposed as the giant con we always knew it to be.

Good morning everyone, by now some of you may have heard Ark Energy has withdrawn the Chalumbin / Wooroora Station industrial wind development. We are awaiting further information on the specific details surrounding this withdrawal as there is a lot of speculation at the moment. As soon as we have more details we will update. The good - after three years of an epic David vs Goliath battle - for the moment at least we have won. The development proposal can be re-submitted, so sadly this may not be the end of it, but for now a big relief and a sincere thanks to everyone who cared, stood up, spread the world and said a collective "NO". A no to a despicable company that treated the community like trash. A company that put profit over the environment. A company that lied repeatedly, omitted data and refused to attend even a single open community consultation meeting. We will have a lot more to say, but for now we are letting it sink in. Cheers

The current deadline for the approval decision on the Chalumbin / Wooroora development is tomorrow the 12th April. The decision window may well be extended again. History has shown there is a time delay between extension notices being issued, and their public release. If a development decision is made, we can expect a press conference from Plibersek.

With council elections done and dusted only one out of the four councilors that endorsed a letter of support for Ark Energy remain. The architect of the letter and wannabe Mayor is gone, the only remnant is a local councilor and former deputy mayor who is highly unlikely to retain the deputy position. Congratulations Cr. Dave Bilney, Cr. Annette Haydon and Mayor Rod Marti, and thanks for standing up for what is right - community consultation and social license - and not pandering to wealthy multi nationals.

Old Russo really is grasping at straws. As he closes the door on his woeful time as chief spinner at Ark Energy he tries to fire a parting shot. He fails epically. Despite lobbying businesses to agree to be filmed offering support a dismal seven (yes 7!) have done so. Come on Russo is that all you've got?! (Of course ALL of these business stand to receive significant financial windfalls if the development proceeds). Russo still won't come clean on who funded and authored a massive media blitz - purported to have been written by third parties - we know why. It's also pretty clear on why Ark's PR firms refuse to admit publicly they are working with the company. Russo, hope the door hits you on the way out. Good riddance.

The infamous corporations of yesteryear include big to***co, offshore oil drilling and asbestos miners -corporate behemoths that lied, bent rules and fabricated data. In thirty years time what will our children say? Will they say you knew about the mass ecocide - the destruction of vast areas of ecologically significant regions? The destruction of habitat critical to the survival of endangered species? The deliberate targeting of high biodiversity areas for industrial developments. How could you sit idly by and let that happen?! I believe that is what is coming, and we can guarantee that foreign owned subsidy raiders will be long gone when that happens. It's up to us all now to stop this. We will not rest.
