πŸš’Ever wondered how firefighters find hydrants so fast?
It’s not magic, it’s all thanks to some clever little clues hidden in plain sight! πŸ‘€
βœ… Look down! You’ll spot markings on the road, kerb, or even on light poles, all pointing us straight to the hydrant. Here’s what they mean:
πŸ”Ή H = Hydrant
πŸ”Ή P = Pathway
πŸ”Ή R = Road
πŸ“ The top number tells us how many metres away the hydrant is, while the bottom number is the size of the water main in millimetres.
πŸ’‘ See a black line across the marker? That means the hydrant is on the opposite side of the road!
You might also notice green β€˜H’ signs or a blue reflective cat’s eye on the road, these are secondary markers to help us find hydrants day or night.
πŸ‘€ Your mission: Next time you’re walking or driving through your neighbourhood, see if you can spot the hydrant markers near your home! Knowing where they are can save precious seconds in an emergency.
πŸ”₯ Bonus tip: Keep the area around hydrants and markers clear, it helps us help you when every second counts.

Make sure your family is prepared for anything this cold snap. Never use outdoor heaters, barbecues or charcoal pits inside your home. LPG, heat beads and other outdoor heaters emit lethal carbon monoxide which can be fatal in a confined space. For more information, visit www.fire.nsw.gov.au

Redfern β€” A Quick Check Could Save a Life πŸ”₯

Smoke alarms save lives β€” but only if they work properly. Here’s how to make sure yours do:

βœ… Test your alarms monthly by pressing the button until they beep
πŸ”‹ Replace the batteries every year
πŸ“… Swap out the whole alarm every 10 years β€” even if it still works
🧽 Clean them every 6 months to keep dust and cobwebs from interfering

Not sure if yours are up to scratch? We’re here to help.

πŸ’₯Are you ready to be a Hydrant Hero? 🦸

There have been numerous incidents throughout the State where firefighters have been unable to access the nearest hydrant in an emergency due to it being poorly marked, obstructed by parked cars, mud or debris, or over-grown vegetation. Poorly maintained or unusable hydrants result in critical time being lost while firefighters clear the hydrant or search for and access another hydrant further from the fire.

This is where you come in! We’d like to encourage members of our community to be a Hydrant Hero following 3 simple steps;

1. Find your closest water hydrant
2. Clear around the hydrant and ensure it is clearly marked and accessible.
3. If maintenance or marking is required, report it to us and we’ll take it from there!

More information on how to locate your nearest hydrant can be found at the below link
