James Street Community Garden

James Street Community Garden Organic, sustainable, community garden which welcomes new members and visitors. jsrcommunitygarden@gm Membership fees are $20 each year.

James Street Reserve Community Garden is in Redfern, Sydney, on the corner of James Street and Young Lane. Our members are young and old, students and workers, locals and those who have travelled from farther afield. They all have a love for digging in the earth, watching seedlings grow, the organic ethos, the magic of composting, sharing gardening knowledge and pulling together to maintain this w

onderful green community space. How it works: Members are assigned to one of the garden’s six communal beds and, with the bed’s other members, decide what to plant. Working bees are held on the first Saturday of every month from 9am. In between bees, members can come and go as they like to tend their beds and are encouraged to help with watering and compost duties for the whole garden. Members often get together informally on Sunday afternoons to garden, especially in the warmer months. Committee meetings are held every month and we also hold a Christmas party in December. It had to happen... gardening got on TikTok ...

We all get caught in the scrolling cycle. A fun video catches your attention, you click through to the next one and suddenly you look up and an hour has gone by. Sure, the short-form video app TikTok can be a time suck, but it’s not always a waste of time. From day-in-the-life videos to instructio...

Great article about creating a diverse garden that will attract the good bugs!

For a resilient garden, diversity is key. But it’s not just about planting different kinds of veggies! By actively increasing your garden’s diversity, you support your wider ecosystem - which we are all a part of, each and every day, whether we realise it or not.

There are good reasons to avoid neat rows of the same plant ... mix it up a bit ...

"Rather than replicating the rigid, old-style rows of a farm field in your vegetable garden, Ms. Walliser recommends a modern, vibrant jumble of vegetables, fruits, herbs and flowers."

Forget whatever you’ve heard about which plants “love” which other plants. This isn’t Match.com for vegetables: There’s a science to it.

Potential new members, neighbours, the simply curious ... you're all welcome to pop into our working bee this Saturday in the garden (corner James Street and Young Lane, Redfern), from 9.15-11.30am. We'll be managing the compost bins (moving the compost around, aerating/twirling it), putting some seeds in for winter, weeding and chatting.

Hi gardeners, here's some great information from The Seed Collection about what we should be planting in the garden now.

As the season turns to autumn and we look back on a successful summer of growing, it's time to think to the future and get your garden ready for the cooler weather ahead.

We love this story!

"To tune in each week and see the daffodils and bluebells coming up, to watch Mr. Don’s raised vegetable beds grow lush and abundant by high summer, was true counterprogramming: Life endures. The birdsong that begins each episode was an antidote to the trauma of the nightly news. In short, “Gardeners’ World” became an oasis of normalcy, a balm for frayed nerves — and not only for British viewers."

“Gardeners’ World” and its star Monty Don have been a balm for frayed nerves.
