A man has died after a shark attack on the Great Barrier Reef south of Cairns 🦈🌊 - a place, on a clear day you can see from my neighbours patio; where the blue carries both beauty and danger, the ocean below and sky above meeting in a vastness humans can never fully hold 💙.

The 39-year-old had reportedly been fishing at Kennedy Shoal, a shallow reef about 50km off the Queensland coast, between Cairns and Townsville, when he was attacked 🎣.

Emergency services were alerted about midday on Sunday 🚨, and the man was taken back to the Hull River Heads boat ramp near Tully in a critical condition.

He died from his injuries soon after being brought ashore 🕊️.
The area is popular for recreational fishing and diving, but like all wild places, it reminds us that the sea is not just scenery - it is depth, distance, mystery, and power 🌌🌊.

Queensland police said they would prepare a report for the coroner following the sudden and non-suspicious death of the 39-year-old man in the Cassowary Coast area.

It was not yet known what type of shark was involved 🦈.

🌊🦈 BYRON BAY SHARK FRENZY — HUNDREDS OF SHARKS IN THE SHALLOWS! 🦈🌊 (Yes… people are STILL swimming in it 😳)
Byron Bay has turned into a full-blown wildlife documentary this week, with massive bait balls pulling HUNDREDS of sharks right into the shoreline — and the footage is WILD. 🎥🔥

According to marine scientists: 🐟 Huge schools of pilchards have moved into the surf zone 🦈 Sharks — including black tip whalers, duskies, bulls & more — are herding them 🌊

People have been filmed swimming AND snorkelling right in the middle of it 🤦‍♂️

Marine expert Dr Daryl McPhee says the feeding frenzy is a healthy sign for the ecosystem… …but a VERY bad environment for humans: “The sharks are feeding. Someone could easily be nipped — not fatal, but definitely not what you want with hundreds of sharks around.” 😬

Lifeguards are warning beachgoers, especially with Schoolies in town:
🚫 If no one is in the water… there’s probably a reason.
🚨 Bait balls = sharks. Lots of them.
🌅 Tallow Beach and south of Cape Byron have been hotspots.

Good news: Surf Life Saving NSW says the bait fish are already starting to move on — and the sharks will go with them. 🏖️

But for now? Byron Bay is basically Shark Netflix, and the ocean has the whole town standing on the sand watching. Stay safe, stay smart, and maaaybe skip the snorkel today. 😅🦈💙

🌊🦈 Tragedy in the Mediterranean

A rare shark attack off the coast of Hadera, Israel has claimed the life of a diver — in what experts say could be one of the most unusual incidents ever recorded in the region.

The victim was near a power-station outflow zone, where warm water attracts large sharks — investigators believe a Dusky shark may have been involved.

This heartbreaking event serves as a stark reminder: even seas we think of as “safe” carry unforeseen risks.

🔍 Important note: While shark attacks in the Mediterranean are extremely rare, this case underlines the need to respect local warnings and understand marine behaviour.

🦈 Shark Sightings

Monday (afternoon, Sept 22)

Multiple bull sharks, ~2m long, were seen 10m offshore near the Rottnest Express ferry terminal in Fremantle.

Tuesday (Sept 23, morning & late morning)

A video captured six bull sharks swimming near the North Fremantle traffic bridge.

At 11:30am, another report confirmed a group of 1.5m-long bull sharks near the bridge.

Wednesday (Sept 24, 1:30pm)

A swarm of bull sharks was still present near the traffic bridge.

SharkSmart confirmed at least two separate Fremantle locations with repeated sightings in less than 48 hours.

🚨 Beach Closures

The City of Fremantle closed beaches “until further notice” due to the sightings.
Closures affect the stretch of the Swan River:

From Crab Bay (next to the traffic bridge)

To Pier 21 Marina (near John Street).

🏛 Government & Research Response

Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) confirmed the sharks were bull sharks.

They are deploying a boat for tagging research in the Swan Canning Estuary.

Shark monitoring receivers already operate at East Fremantle, Blackwall Reach, and near Canning Bridge, providing near real-time alerts.

Residents are urged to report shark sightings immediately to WA Water Police (9442 8600).

⚠️ Historical Context

The location has tragic significance:

Feb 4, 2023: 16-year-old Stella Berry was fatally attacked by a bull shark while swimming near the North Fremantle traffic bridge. This was the first fatal shark attack in the river in 100 years (previous was in 1923).

Other encounters:

2021: Cameron Wrathall, bitten on thigh at Blackwall Reach.

2022: Bailey Haffner bumped by a shark at Matilda Bay.

2025 (Feb): Georgina Smith’s canoe bitten at Blackwall Reach, throwing her into the water.

🌧 Environmental Factors

Bull sharks are one of the few shark species that tolerate freshwater.

They’re responsible for ~90% of Australian shark fatalities (alongside great whites & tiger sharks).

Rainfall link: Heavy rains can drive sharks into estuaries due to salinity shifts.

2025 is WA’s wettest winter since 1996, which marine biologists suggest may explain the activity spike.

🦈 Rare Orange Shark Discovery (Costa Rica)

What happened:

A 6.5-foot nurse shark was caught during a sport fishing trip off Costa Rica.

The shark displayed xanthism (a rare condition causing golden/yellow pigmentation).

It also had albinism traits — most notably, ghostly white eyes.

Why it’s unique:

Xanthism has been seen in some fish, but never before documented in sharks, rays, or skates in the Caribbean.

Normally, nurse sharks are brown, which camouflages them on reefs and rocky seabeds.

What scientists say:

Researchers from the Federal University of Rio Grande studied the specimen.

They note the shark’s unusual pigmentation didn’t hinder its survival.

It raises genetic questions:

Was this just a rare one-off mutation?

Or could it signal a new genetic trend in the local nurse shark population?
