Strong Mob, Strong futures.

27 of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students travelled to Gladstone last week for the Dorrie Day Careers expo 2026, joining students from across the region.

The day gave student the opportunity to explore future pathways in higher education, training and employment, connect with organisations and discover where their interests could take them.

A great day of connection, opportunity and thinking about what comes next 💙

👨‍🏫Principal Challenge - Week 5 | Out and about 👨‍🏫

This week's principal challenge took Nr Newell well beyond the school gates, with a week focused on celebrating students, connecting with colleagues and looking at the bigger picture for state education.

A definite highlight was attending the QATSIF Graduation and celebrating the achievement of our students.

From celebrating students to talking strategy, Mr Newell then joined fellow state school principals from across the region for discussions hosted by the Director-General. The day explored current education priorities, future planning and the successes and challenges being experienced consistently across our state schools.

There was even time for a behind-the-scenes tour of the newly redeveloped Aurizon Stadium.

The connections continued with a visit to fellow principal challenge school, Mount Morgan State High School, where Mr Newell joined Mr Lye for a learning walk, before attending CQUniversity's High School Engagement Dinner.

Then it was back through the gates at Rocky High, with just enough time to reconnect with students, share a few high fives and be there to farewell them as another busy week came to an end. Because no matter where the Principal Challenge takes him, it's always good to finish the week back where it matters most - with our students.

Week 5 was a good reminder that a principal's week can stretch well beyond the school grounds. Whether celebrating students, learning alongside other schools or contributing to conversations about the future of state education, it all comes back to the same thing - creating the best possible opportunities for our students.

🏆STAFF vs STUDENTS: THE RIVALRY CONTINUES 🏆

It's a long-standing tradition at Rocky High - the annual Staff vs Students Sporting Competition.

Each year, our Year 12 cohort steps up, confident they finally have what it takes to demonstrate their sporting prowess and take down our incomparably talented staff. And each year... things don't always go according to plan. 🙃

Round One kicked off yesterday with netball - and our staff wasted no time reminding the Class of 2026 exactly who they're up against.

The final score? Staff 17 - Students 4.

A convincing start for the staff and another step towards maintaining the dynasty.

The students may have youth, speed and plenty of confidence on their side, but our staff have experience, determination and a reputation to protect!

There are still mores to come, so the question remains... can Year 12 stage a comeback, or will the staff continue their reign of dominance in 2026?

Check out the gallery for just some of the action!

Senior Schools Cup Success!

This past weekend, our Senior Volleyball teams headed to the Gold Coast to compete in the annual Queensland Volleyball Senior Schools Cup. With hundreds of schools from across Queensland taking part, our students represented Rockhampton State High School with pride and produced some outstanding results.

Our Senior Boys battled their way through some tough opposition to earn a place in the Bronze Medal match. With the match tied at one set apiece, it came down to a thrilling third set. The boys fought right to the end, narrowly going down 15-13 to finish 4th overall.

Our Senior Girls put together an impressive tournament, showing determination and composure through some incredibly close matches. Their strong performances earned them a place in the Gold Medal match, where they faced a quality opponent and came away with a fantastic Silver Medal.

These results mark the highest overall combined finish for our Senior Volleyball teams in Rocky High history - an outstanding achievement and a reflection of the commitment our students continue to show as our volleyball program grows from strength to strength.

A huge thank you to Mr Lorette and Miss Blanch for the time, effort and commitment they put into providing this fantastic opportunity for our students.

We also sincerely thank our 2026 Senior Volleyball sponsors - JusRay Electrical, Rockhampton Sports Arena and Ian Weigh Toyota. Your generous support helped make this Schools Cup experience possible for our students.

Congratulations to all our players and coaches on a fantastic weekend. We are incredibly proud of you!

Rocky High History - Celebrating a Champion

In August 1978, the Rockhampton community watched with pride as the Commonwealth Games unfolded in Edmonton, Canada. Among the athlete's representing Australia was Rockhampton State High School past student Kenrick Tucker, whose remarkable achievements inspired our school and the wider community.

At just 18 years of age and only weeks after graduating from the junior ranks, Kenrick claimed Commonwealth Games Gold in the Cycle sprint, announcing himself as one of Australia's brightest young cycling talents.

Kenrick went on to represent Australia at the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games before returning to the 1982 Commonwealth Games, where he once again won Gold.

In recognition of his outstanding sporting achievements and the legacy he has left for future generations, Rockhampton State High School proudly named one of our sports houses Tucker Kangaroos in his honour during our Centenary Celebrations in 2019.

Kenrick's journey from Rocky High student to Commonwealth Games champion continues to inspire our students to strive for excellence, embrace opportunity and chase their own dreams.

Once a Rocky High student, always part of the Rocky High story. 💙

👨🏼‍🏫Principal Challenge - Week 4 👨🏼‍🏫

This week's Principal Challenge proved that while Mr Newell is an experienced principal... there are still a few skills he is working on!

The week began in our Aquaculture Centre, where Mr Newell joined our students in collecting data. For those who remember in week 1, the comments that fishing wasn't his greatest strength, we're pleased to report there has been some improvement. Although, when you're armed with a net and a captive group of fish, we'd argue that there is still room for refinement. 🎣

Next stop was our Year 7 Tyke-Oh Drumming workshop, where Mr Newell enthusiastically joined in with our students. Let's just say it's a good thing his career is in education and not music. The energy and enthusiasm were certainly there... the rhythm may be a work in progress. 🥁

To round out the week, Mr Newell headed to the oval to join our Year 10 HPE students during their practical assessment. With students taking the lead by instructing their peers through a range of activities, he happily stepped up to join the sessions, squeezing in his PT workout for the day.

While every week brings its own challenges and unexpected moments. Through every challenge, every success and every new experience, we continue to learn, teach and grow - together.
