Building Safer Workplaces Through Practical Support

WorkSafe Tasmania’s Advisory Service provides PCBUs with practical, non-regulatory support to strengthen workplace health and safety.

Funded by the WorkCover Board Tasmania and delivered by WorkSafe Tasmania, the service helps workplaces identify opportunities for improvement and build stronger health and safety practices.

A recent engagement session with a local council highlighted the value of this approach. Participants described the sessions as informative, engaging and thought-provoking, with discussions prompting valuable conversations about workplace improvements.

Wet, icy and slippery conditions are far more common during winter, and so are slips, trips and falls.

If you’re working outdoors or in the rain this winter, taking a few extra precautions can make a big difference:
- Wear high-visibility clothing
- Choose footwear with good grip
- Use gloves suited to the conditions
- Slow down and take care on slippery surfaces

A little extra caution now can help prevent a serious injury later.

What is a PCBU?

PCBU or ‘Person Conducting a Business or Undertaking’ is a broad term used throughout work health and safety legislation to describe all forms of modern working arrangements.

The term PCBU relates to an organisation or person who is sometimes known as ‘the employer’.

Each PCBU, regardless of the work environment has a primary duty of care to ensure the health and safety of workers while they are at work in the business or undertaking and others who may be affected by the carrying out of work, such as visitors.

Examples of PCBUs include:
- public and private companies
- partners in a partnership
- sole traders and self-employed people
- government departments and authorities
- associations if they have one or more employees
- local government councils
- Independent schools
- cooperatives
- universities.
