🚣 Enclosed waters can be dangerous, even when they appear calm.

Operation Icebreaker is out on inland and alpine waters this long weekend chatting about boating in cold weather and the increased risks of ending up in the water ⚠️

Low water temps, shallow areas & strong currents increase the risk. Before heading out:

🔹 Familiarise yourself with the area
🔹 Check the weather and currents
🔹 Check you have the right safety equipment and that it all works
🔹 Wear a lifejacket
🔹 Keep a proper lookout for hazards above and below the surface
🔹 Let someone know where you're going - have 2 means of communication, e.g. a marine radio and a mobile phone

Do you know the signs of hypothermia? 🥶

Operation Icebreaker is out on inland and alpine waterways this long weekend chatting about boating in cold weather and the increased risks of ending up in the water ⚠️

❄️ Hypothermia is the result of heat loss from the body’s core and happens when your body temperature drops below 35°C. This affects your brain, heart and other internal organs. It can take up to 30 minutes to develop.

Some of the signs of hypothermia are:

🔹 intense shivering in the early stages as the body tries to maintain its core temperature
🔹 slurred speech and confusion
🔹 slowing pulse as blood flow to the hands, feet and skin slows down
🔹 dilated pupils
🔹 no shivering in the later stages
🔹 eventually a hypothermic person will lose consciousness.

The risk of hypothermia increases when you're exposed to the elements, even on a sunny day so take extra care when boating on alpine and inland waters over winter ❄️

🦺 Your lifejacket should always be the last layer. Wearing it under your winter woollies can stop it from inflating, increasing your risk of drowning and hypothermia.

⚠️ Alpine waters can be dangerous. High altitudes can bring cold and windy conditions that change quickly.

📸 Whales are back along the coast!

If you're lucky enough to spot one, remember:

🚤 Stay at least 100m away or 300m if there's a calf

↔️ Jet skis keep a minimum of 300m away

🌊 Travel at a slow speed and leave minimal wash

❄️ Winter is here and this is your reminder to take extra care out on the water over the coming months ❄️

🥶 Cold shock can set in immediately if you fall in, causing involuntary gasping, rapid breathing, and a drastic loss of body heat that quickly leads to hypothermia

After heavy rain over the past few days, keep you and your prop safe by sticking to a slow speed and maintaining a proper lookout for any debris that may have washed into waterways 👀

This was filmed at Coffs Harbour over the weekend 🌊🌧️

We've got our fingers crossed for calmer, sunnier conditions soon 🤞🌞
