🕒 With Easter already keeping households busy, this year it also brings the end of daylight savings, which makes it the ideal moment to check your home’s smoke alarms.

A quick test now can make a life‑saving difference later.

🔥 To keep your household protected, smoke alarms should be:

Powered by a 10‑year lithium battery, with any replaceable batteries changed every year.

Installed in every bedroom, living area, hallway, and garage AND maintained regularly. A gentle vacuum can made a big difference.

Mounted correctly:

> On the ceiling at least 30 cm from the wall, or

> On the wall at least 30 cm from the ceiling (This avoids “dead air space” where smoke may not reach.)

Interconnected, so if one alarm sounds, they all do.

Entire smoke alarm units replaced every 10 years, even if hard‑wired.

🧹 How to check your smoke alarm

Press the test button and listen for the beep

Monthly: test, vacuum, and dust the alarm to remove particles that can affect performance.

❤️ Look out for loved ones

Take a moment to help family, neighbours, or anyone who may need support to check their alarms. Take the opportunity to talk about fire safety inside the home and what their plan is if a fire was to occur.

🐣 Easter is nearly here — take fire safety with you, wherever your adventures take you.

Whether you’re hitting the road 🚙, setting up camp 🏕, or settling in with chocolate 🍫, the Easter long weekend is a great time to enjoy a break with loved ones. It’s also a perfect moment to make sure you’re staying safe, especially if you’re travelling or spending time outdoors.

🚐 Caravans

Check your smoke alarm is working — dust it off and press test for that reassuring “Beep! Beep!”

If you don’t have a smoke alarm installed, add it to your pre‑trip checklist.

Inspect your fire extinguisher and make sure the gauge is still in the green.

🔥 Fire Blankets

Keep a fire blanket in an easy‑to‑reach spot.

Make sure everyone knows where it is.

Fire blankets are especially useful for quickly smothering cooking or clothing fires.

🍳 Cooking Outdoors

Never leave cooking or BBQs unattended.

If using gas, check all connections and ensure the area is well‑ventilated.

Turn everything off when you’re finished — including the gas bottle.

🔥 Campfires

Clear the area around your campfire of flammable materials.

Always have an adult supervising who is capable of putting the fire out if needed.

Fully extinguish your campfire before leaving — it must be cool to touch.

🚨 Know the rules before you go

The Fire Danger Period is still in place across many parts of Victoria. Check the local restrictions for the areas you’ll be visiting and stay informed using the VicEmergency App.

🌼 Wishing everyone a safe and happy Easter. Enjoy the long weekend, look after each other, and stay fire safe.

The VicEmergency app (and website) brings together emergency information and warnings from key emergency service agencies to alert for fire, flood, storm, health emergencies, water and more!
Understanding what the different alerts mean is important for helping to make informed decisions for you and your family.

The three levels of warnings are:
Advice 🟡
Watch and Act 🟠
Emergency Warning 🔴

Don't expect warnings to be issued in any particular order. The first warning you could get could be an Emergency Warning - watch the video below for more key information on warnings and what they mean.
