🚒 Team MN3 — event done, legs cooked, spirits sky‑high.

Rutherford firefighters, climbing proudly as Team MN3, have wrapped up the Firies Climb for MND, and we didn’t just show up… we absolutely sent it.

Together, we hammered out over 30 full laps of the Furber Steps in full gear. With 1,902 steps per lap, that means Team MN3 climbed a massive:

57,060 steps in total.
(Yes, our knees are now on annual leave.)

And the best part, we raised almost $16,000 for Motor Neurone Disease. That’s huge support for research, families, and the fight for a cure.

🚒 Today’s the big day — Rutherford firefighters are charging in as proud members of Team MN3.

We’re geared up, caffeinated, slightly nervous, and absolutely ready to tackle thousands of steps for the Firies Climb for MND.

As part of Team MN3, we’re climbing for a cure, climbing for the families affected, and climbing because someone in the command said “this’ll be good bonding” and now here we are… in full gear… voluntarily sweating before sunrise.

👨‍🚒 Team MN3 + Rutherford = one unstoppable, slightly unhinged unit.

Every step counts. Every gasp counts. Every “why are we like this?” moment counts.

If you see us out there today, yell something encouraging — apparently we climb faster when our pride is on the line.

🔥 Structure Fire – Greta 🔥

At around 5:00pm today, crews from Rutherford Fire Station responded alongside Fire and Rescue NSW Station 237 Branxton and local Rural Fire Service (RFS) crews to reports of a structure fire just outside Greta.

On arrival, firefighters were met with a large shed well alight, with smoke drifting across the property and the fire developing rapidly. Crews moved straight into action, working together to contain and suppress the blaze.

After a solid effort and some time on the hoses, the combined crews brought the fire under control and fully extinguished it.

A strong multi‑agency response and great teamwork all round.

City2surf = Done ✅ 🚒

Over the weekend, our firefighters Jordy and Tony took on the massive City2Surf challenge, completing the full 14km course in full structural firefighting gear. They joined Fire and Rescue NSW Commissioner, Jeremy Fewtrell AFSM and more than 60 FRNSW firefighters, all stepping up to raise funds for Beat The Burn, supporting the Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation and their incredible work helping children with serious burns injuries.

A huge effort from Jordy, Tony, and every firefighter who pushed through for such an important cause.

🚒💪🫡 Standing Strong for Kids Recovering From Life‑Changing Burns

This weekend, two of our own will be in Sydney, walking from the city to Bondi with Commissioner Jeremy Fewtrell AFSM. They’ll cover 14km in full turnout gear and carrying a breathing apparatus, a tough, uncomfortable effort made in honour of children who have suffered devastating burn injuries.

Their pain on the day is nothing compared to the strength those kids have shown. That’s why they’re walking. That’s why we’re supporting.

🚒 Outstanding Support from Maitland City Bowling Club 💙

We’re incredibly proud to share that Maitland City Bowling Club has contributed an amazing $7,500 towards our Firies Stair Climb for MND. This is one of the biggest community donations our team has received, and it shows just how committed the club is to backing local firefighters and the fight against Motor Neurone Disease.

Their generosity gives a massive boost to our fundraising efforts and helps support vital MND research, care programs, and awareness initiatives. With support like this behind us, we’re feeling a lot more confident about tackling those stairs — which is good, because there are plenty of them.

🧗‍♂️ About the Firies Stair Climb

The Firies Stair Climb is an annual charity challenge where firefighters gear up and take on a tough vertical climb to raise funds for MND and mental health causes. This year, we have a number of members from across our district stepping up for the event, all climbing in honour of Australians living with Motor Neurone Disease. It’s sweaty, it’s punishing, and it’s something our crew is proud to take on — especially with Maitland City’s support pushing us upwards.

A huge thank you to Club President Henry Meskauskas OAM, Operations Manager Hayley Eveleigh, and the entire Maitland City Bowling Club community. Your support genuinely makes a difference — and might just save us from needing an extra oxygen cylinder at the top.

🚒💪 Firefighters Training Hard for the Firies Climb — Thanks to Audax Athletic Rutherford 💪🚒

Our Metropolitan North 3 firefighters are continuing their preparation for the 2026 Firies Climb for MND, where we’ll be taking on the 1,902‑step Furber Stairs in full firefighting gear to raise awareness and support for Motor Neurone Disease research.

This week, the crew from Rutherford Fire Station (455) were invited by Audax Athletic to complete a training session at their gym. Their support has been fantastic, giving us a space to train and helping us showcase the effort behind this challenge. We even suited up in full firefighting gear for a few photos — and after the workout they put us through, the stair climb is starting to look like the easy part.

🚨 Hazmat Ready: Level Up for 455

Over the weekend, a group of our firefighters took the next big step in their capability — completing their Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) course and officially joining our station’s specialist hazmat team.

The training covered everything from dangerous goods identification, chemical behaviour, decontamination procedures, and PPE operations, through to hands‑on work with specialised gases, advanced hazardous‑detection technology, and learning how to recognise and manage different types of toxic gases and chemicals in real‑world environments.

Long days, big learning curve and the crew absolutely nailed it.

Proud of the team for stepping up and strengthening our station’s capability even further. 💪🚒
