Lithium-ion batteries are part of everyday life, powering phones, tools, e-bikes and more. When used correctly and purchased from trusted sources, they are a safe and reliable technology.

However, fires involving lithium-ion batteries are one of the fastest-growing risks in NSW. Fire and Rescue NSW urges the community to follow these key safety tips:

- Buy batteries and chargers from reputable retailers with safety approvals
- Use the correct charger for each device
- Charge on hard, non-flammable surfaces away from exits
- Never charge batteries overnight or leave them unattended
- Stop using batteries that are damaged, swollen or overheating
- Never dispose of batteries in household bins – use proper recycling points
- Install working smoke alarms near charging areas

If a battery catches fire, evacuate immediately, close the door, and call Triple Zero (000).

Horse Rescued from Drain at Bobs Farm.

At 8:18am this morning, Fire and Rescue crews were called to an unusual emergency at Bobs Farm.

On arrival, crews found the big fella in serious strife, submerged up to his head in cold water and thick mud, unable to free himself.

Firefighters from 402 Salamander Bay and 357 Lambton worked together to safely rescue the stranded animal from the drain.

Thanks to their efforts, the horse was brought to safety and is now reportedly recovering well–warm, dry, and happily tucking into a well-earned feed of hay.

A top job by all crews involved!

🚨 E-Scooter Battery Ignites in Garbage Truck 🚨

Fire and Rescue NSW crews responded to a garbage truck load fire caused by an e-scooter battery crushed during collection. Thankfully, the driver promptly utilised the truck's fire suppression systems and proceeded to the waste transfer station, where fire crews provided further assistance.

These batteries can explode when damaged, posing a significant risk to lives.

🛑 Do not place batteries or electronic devices in household bins.
✅ Instead, take them to a designated battery drop-off or recycling centre.

This simple action can prevent hazardous fires like this incident.

🔥 Truck Fire – Proper Battery Disposal Matters! 🔥

Early this morning, firefighters responded to a truck fire. Upon arrival, crews found a pile of recycling material, which had been dropped by the truck, well alight. Firefighters quickly worked to extinguish the fire.

This incident serves as a timely reminder to dispose of batteries responsibly. Improper disposal can lead to dangerous fires, as seen today. Please follow the advice provided by Port Stephens Council in the post below to ensure safe and responsible battery disposal.

🔋 Safe battery disposal reminder! 🔋

One of Council's recycling trucks at Salamander Bay caught fire early this morning from a suspected battery fire. 🔥

Residents are reminded that batteries should not be placed in any kerbside or public rubbish bin. ❌

Batteries are recycled through our Community Recycling Centre and B-Cycle locations like Bunnings, Woolworths, Coles and Aldi. ♻️
