As of Sunday, 1 February 2026, the Wonnangatta-Dargo fire was successfully contained thanks to the tireless efforts of firefighters over the last few weeks.

Crews and aircraft will remain in the area to extinguish any new and remaining hotspots, but recreationists can resume activity in some areas.

When travelling through burnt areas, watch for “ash pits”. These are voids filled with ash after a fire burns underground, and can create tripping hazards and dangerous conditions when using 4 wheelers.

For current information on park and road closures in the area, visit the Parks Victoria and VicTraffic websites or call 13 11 70.

For state forest and road closures, check: ffm.vic.gov.au/forest-and-road-closures

Additional crews are being brought in to support the Lake Barracoota fire near Mallacoota.

While there’s no current threat to community – we’re putting additional resources in there ahead of expected warmer conditions over the weekend.

There are still dozens of hotspots on the firegrounds - mostly along the north east perimeter of the fire.

Specialist rappel crew have been choppered in - and will be supported by arduous firefighters shortly – who all bring experience working in rugged terrain such as the heathland in this area.

The crews will be based close to the fire at the MLC grounds.

Works are also underway to clear up Barracoota Track to provide safe road access to a portion of the northern fire edge for ground crews.

As temperatures rise, we’re reminding everyone that preventing bushfires starts with personal responsibility.

Last bushfire season, there were 59 offences relating to causing a bushfire, with 23 linked to reckless behaviour.
In one incident, local police evacuated more than 150 people from campsites in the Cape Otway area after a fire was reported in bushland near Blanket Bay Road and Red Hill Track. After more than six hours, the fire was brought under control, with 14 hectares burnt.

Thankfully, no one was physically injured. Investigators later determined the cause was an unattended campfire that had not been properly extinguished.

During the fire season, Victoria Police implements Operation Safeguard, ensuring police are ready to respond to fire-related threats.

The community also plays a critical role in bushfire prevention, particularly by reporting reckless or suspicious behaviour.

This fire season, remember to:
🔥 Check Fire Danger Ratings daily and know what you can and can’t do.
🔥 Use more than one source of information to stay informed.
🔥 If you see suspicious activity in progress, call Triple Zero (000).

You can apply for an FDP permit online at https://firepermits.vic.gov.au - it's completely free and helps ensure Brigades don't get responded unnecessarily.
