Salisbury Court

Salisbury Court Salisbury Court is a homestead in the New England region of New South Wales, Australia. Comments, suggestions and helpers always welcome.

It was commenced in 1844 as the home for the Marsh family that developed the 35,000 acre property as a fine merino wool growing business. Today the granite, surface stone main house is one of the few remaining examples of this type and scale of early colonial architecture. It is set on the remaining picturesque 240 acres of the original landholding

These pages will show over time how we live in, plan to update and will renovate.

Sorry for not much (no) other action from Salisbury over the last 12 months but the annual rainfall report is IN! On the macro scale, not a bad year - about 100 mm shy of our long term average. The devil is in the detail though with rainfall over the last two years not really adhering to the long term pattern which means pasture patterns are changing as well.

The (good) news is that I'm taking a moment away from off-farm - i.e. paid - work, so maybe there'll be more project updates in the coming months.

A great 2025 to all.

So the data is in - albeit a bit delayed. A third corker year for rain evidenced by the bogging of various tractors and vehicles. Highest rainfall since 1984 but still 250 mm off the wettest ever recorded in 1863! Now drying out again so the old adage holds true, 'you don't' know what you've got until it's gone'!

This is one of the long term projects. This started with taking off the first set of shutters about 5 or 6 years ago but most of the work was done in the last 12 months. There are another four sets of these shutters to go!!

It all seemed to be quite calm watching this storm cell from the front verandah away off in the distance. Turned real about 20 minutes later with a 30mm drop right on our heads - and I'm sure others copped worse. Nature huh!?

How quickly a year goes by. The 2021 rainfall report from Salisbury Court is IN. Another good year for water and if you can gauge anything from the amount of pasture on the place and grass around the house, nature is enjoying the effect - although vegetation control efforts are creaking under the pressure. Cracked the 1000ml! Highest recorded rainfall since 1996.

We try not to dwell on the past around here - unless it's remembering good things - but with SO much water around at the moment, it's hard not to reflect on what things were like pretty recently. Driving past Dangar's Lagoon today, we were reminded of a photo from November 2019. How 'awesome' is nature - and we mean that in the Oxford English Dictonary meaning of the word! Following photos from almost the same spot.
