A Message from the Right Honourable the Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner this morning…
“…HMAS Brisbane III is one of the Royal Australian Navy’s most advanced warships and proudly carries the name of our city as the third vessel to do so.
“We are honoured to welcome the ship and its company to Brisbane as they exercise their right to the Freedom of Entry to the City.
“This significant occasion reflects the enduring relationship between the City of Brisbane and the Royal Australian Navy.
“The granting of Freedom of Entry dates back to medieval times and remains the highest accolade a city can bestow upon a military unit.
“It is a symbol of trust and confidence, permitting a formed body of armed personnel to march through the city as a mark of mutual respect and goodwill.
“The name ‘HMAS Brisbane’ has a distinguished history within the Royal Australian Navy, with ships bearing this name serving our nation from the First World War through to present day operations.
“This proud legacy continues with the current ship, which plays a vital role in protecting Australia and contributing to regional and global security.
“On behalf of the people of Brisbane, I congratulate HMAS Brisbane on this important and historic occasion and thank the officers and crew for their service to our nation.”
