Dorset Economic Benefits of the Rail Trail and BlueDerby Mountain Bike Trails

I've listed some interesting summary points on both of these projects:

Rail Trail
· An Economic Benefit Assessment shows more than 23,000 people would walk or cycle the trail each year, growing to 35,000 after 15 years.
· Rail trail tourism will bring an estimated $3.5 million per annum to the region five years post-construction, with flow-on impacts across Tasmania of $6.8 million per annum.
· Gross State Product is estimated to increase by $3.3 million per annum, supporting an estimated 40 FTEs five years post-construction, which would continue to increase.
· A study of three Victorian trails showed that recreational cyclists are a high yield and high spending market and typically stay longer – the average spend per visitor is $244 per day and with indirect expenditure on accommodation and the like this figure increases to $447 per day.
· Benefit to existing local residents – will be on a leisurely 2% gradient that will encourage people to exercise more frequently. The economic benefit to society of motivating an inactive person to walk or cycle is estimated to be between $5000 and $7000 per annum.

Some stats for Blue Derby are as follows:

Rider Numbers for April
· Total for the month – 1,978
· Average per day – 66
· Busiest time for people to be riding the trails – 10am-2pm

Economic Activity from Dec 2014 – 11 May 2015
· Property movement of $1.7 million in Derby
· Accommodation bed capacity has gone from 14 beds to 45 beds, coming from 3 brand new providers and 1 existing provider refurbishing
· Cafes increased from 2 to 3

Important to note that the activity in Derby has happened with only 30km of trail open with another 50km still to come.

What fantastic news that the whole of the North East will now benefit from the Federal Government contributing $1.47 million towards the rail trail construction between Scottsdale & Launceston. Construction jobs, multiple tourism jobs once completed. This will add to the economic benefits being seen with the Blue Derby Mountain Bike Tracks.
Disappointing to be informed that almost 2 years after voting for the Labour Green bill in the Upper House that has almost smashed the forest industry our local member will be helping those that wish to stop the building of the Rail Trail.
Maybe the wider community benefits from both these industries are lost on our local member.

Following the successful Regional Innovation, State Growth session held at the Tasmanian Breath of Fresh Air (BOFA) Film Festival in November 2014 an exciting number of initiatives have emerged.

One of these is a Regional Innovation Survey, based on the work of Dr Anton Kriz, international expert in regional innovation, who lead the session in 2014.

As part of this, I have been asked to invite the general community to complete the online Regional Innovation Survey. The survey takes around 10 minutes to complete - the more completed surveys from the broader community the better.

Tasmania abounds in innovation. However, to create state growth, we need to make sure that innovation is encouraged in every region of Tasmania.

After last week's 'Ice Breaker' Community forum, Tasmania Police Detective Inspector John King has provided me with some helpful educational resources for anyone interested.

The M**h Project was established by businessman Thomas M Siebel in 2005 in response to the growing M**h epidemic in the USA. It is used as a large-scale prevention program through the use of public service messaging, public policy and community outreach.

The program has community action programs and an in-school lesson designed to communicate the risks of M**h use.

Everything you've ever wanted to know about M**h. Ask the M**h Project to get your questions answered with straight facts about M**h and true stories.
