All elected Local Govt people- Mayors, Deputies and Councillors have been invited to make submissions to the state government on a determination of allowances 2026; i think that means wage increase!
I made the following submission:
Tribunal Secretariat,
I welcome the opportunity to make a submission to the Victorian Independent Remuneration Tribunal on the Allowances for Mayors, Deputy Mayors and Councillors 2026 Determination.
The role of a Councillor, Mayor or Deputy Mayor are initially voluntary; and the individual choosing to undertake these roles has a responsibility to understand what the role incorporates and requires in terms of time, commitment and remuneration. There is not only mandatory education prior to nominating (including the roles and responsibilities) there is further training once elected. Remuneration is clearly pointed out throughout this process.
I do not believe there is any case for elected Local government representatives to -after the fact- feel they are not adequately renumerated.
I also think, that at this time when the burdens being imposed by state Government on our Communities -ESVF levy- land tax - and other federal imposts would not be welcomed by the Communities we represent, nor do I or I'm sure any of my colleagues want to be the one to tell our Communities there is no money to fix roads, no money for ambulance stations, no money for childcare - but money for Councillors and Mayors to get a pay increase.
I believe the credibility of Local Government would be strongly strengthened if the determination was not to change the current allowances.
Yours Sincerely
Cr Miki Wilson
