On Sunday 24th May three Shannons Flat Brigade members attended a trauma care workshop at Adaminaby RFS shed. The training, provided by a highly experienced team from CareFlight, was excellent. Rather than first aid, the emphasis was on increasing our confidence in assessing, triaging and treating trauma patients so that they have the best care in the circumstances until professional medical help arrives. A number of realistic scenarios - from a child's bike accident through to a motor vehicle accident - enabled everyone to get involved.
As with all such events, the also day proved valuable from simply mingling with members of other brigades. To cap it off, Adrian (Ado) Butter's wife, Amanda, provided an outstanding lunch.
It proved a great day all around, organised by Ado and a credit to the Adaminaby Brigade.

Two recent events for the Shannons Flat Brigade.
Our new Cat 7A truck was tried out on the annual District Exercise on 23rd August. The exercise consisted of grassfire and motor vehicle accident scenarios. Members Rob F, Marwa H, Liam M and Mark H. attended.
Then, on Sunday 31st, there was a good turn out to help Cooma Brigade in an assistance to landholder burn at Bunyan. The days leading up were very windy and wet but the day of the burn turned out to be a perfect spring day with an early frost followed by sunshine and a light breeze. Nigel C, Liam M, Jake K, Rob F, John and Judith G and Mark H. attended in two Cat 7s and a Cat 9.

MYTH: Prescribed burns ONLY reduce bushfire risk.

Our fire crews hear this misnomer all the time! 🧑‍🚒 There is actually 3 types of burns—each of which has a crucial role in our fire management strategy.

🚒 Hazard Reduction Burns: These burns reduce bushfire fuel to mitigate the severity and spread of bushfires.

🌱 Ecological Burns: These cool burns promote the growth of native vegetation, manage invasive species, and enhance habitat for wildlife.

🖤💛❤️ Cultural Burns: These low-risk burns are conducted with the Ngunnawal Community to integrate traditional fire knowledge and values within the ACT, and foster stewardship of the land.

It’s currently prescribed burning season, so you might see some smoke in the coming months. Thanks for your understanding as we carry out these carefully controlled operations.

Four Shannons Flat-Yaouk RFS members (Rob F, Steve O, Marwa H and Mark H.) attended the Aviation Communication & Evaluation Workshop on Saturday 12th. An introduction to the retardants/gels, locations of assets etc., was held at the Cooma Car Club before moving to the airport for practical training with both rotary and fixed wing aircraft. Shown is Steve O. calling in a helicopter for what proves to be a pretty accurate drop.
