Congratulations to Geoff Troth, Deputy Unit Commander (Administration) at Marine Rescue Shellharbour. Geoff was recently nominated in the category 2026 Illawarra Emergency Volunteer of the Year in recognition of his part in saving lives on the water and his unwavering commitment to Marine Rescue.

The NSW Volunteer of the Year Awards celebrate the work of thousands of individuals and volunteer teams from a diverse range of organisations across the state. The awards are hosted by the Centre for Volunteering, a not-for-profit organisation providing leadership on volunteering in NSW. Recognition was presented to Geoff by Ms Katelin McInerney MP, Member for Kiama.

None of us at Marine Rescue volunteer our time and effort for the recognition. It is nice though to receive some positive feedback occasionally. Well done Geoff.

You never know when something might not work as well as you expect. That’s also true when you are fishing 14 nautical miles (25km) off the Port Kembla coastline and your engine won’t start.

Marine Rescue Shellharbour responded to a call for help on Sunday when this scenario occurred. The crew on SH30 headed out and made contact with a 7.5m fishing boat with a single outboard. The skipper on the fishing boat managed to get the engine going but with limited power. Marine Rescue SH30 shadowed the fishing boat as it returned to Port Kembla under its own power.

While our crew did not need to tow the vessel, the fisherman were extremely glad to have SH30 close by, just in case their mechanical issue worsened.

Well done SH30.
