A disability services provider has been fined $60,000 for failing to hold compulsory workers compensation insurance while engaging 18 workers over a 19-month period.

Workers in the disability support sector face an increased risk of injury due to the physical nature of their work, including manual handling, mobility assistance and personal care tasks often performed in unpredictable environments.

Workers compensation insurance provides an important safety net for workers and peace of mind for employers. Without it, businesses risk significant penalties and workers may be left without the support they need following an injury.

A proactive compliance operation in the Carnarvon horticultural region has resulted in a significant prosecution outcome.

A crop growing and fruit-picking business has been fined $95,000 and ordered to pay an additional $85,226 in avoided premiums. The investigation found 76 workers were employed over an 18-month period, with no valid policy of workers compensation insurance in place.

This outcome demonstrates the value of proactive compliance activities in identifying non-compliance, and reinforcing employer obligations under the WA scheme.

A Kingsway fast food service business was recently prosecuted following an uninsured claim. Not only did they employ 37 workers for 21 months without workers compensation insurance, but they were also charged for three claims management offences.

Today, ten of our staff volunteered with the Salvation Army Community Lunch, helping prepare and serve meals to more than 100 people experiencing hardship in our community.

We are committed to supporting the community we serve here in WA, and are incredibly proud of the staff who generously gave their time to embody our values in action.

Sometimes, the smallest acts of service can make the biggest difference, demonstrating the power of community, compassion, and collective action.

Access to clear information matters when it comes to workers compensation and injury management.

This week, our inspectors took a trip down South to Bunbury, Busselton and Margaret River to connect with local employers and follow-up on open compliance matters.

They also took the opportunity to meet with local insurance brokers and healthcare providers to provide hardcopy publications for service providers and injured workers.

A Victoria Park restaurant has been fined $72,000 after employing 40 workers without the required workers compensation insurance.

The business operated without insurance cover for more than 20 months, leaving workers potentially unprotected if they suffered a workplace injury or illness.
