As temperatures rise over the next few months leading into summer, it is important that you are aware of the risk of Japanese Encephalitis Virus (JEV).

While serious illness and hospitalisation from JEV is rare, the more mosquitoes, the greater the risk.

Know how to avoid mosquito bites – cover up, repel, clean up:

1. Cover up

Wear long, loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing, covering as much of the body as possible. Mosquitoes can bite through tight clothes like jeans.

2. Repel

Use insect repellent containing DEET (diethyltoluamide) or picaridin and always follow instructions on the label.

3. Clean up

Empty water from open containers around your home or workplace to stop mosquitoes breeding in water and have mosquito screens on windows and doors.

As well as avoiding being bitten by mosquitoes, vaccination is the best way to prevent JEV risk of infection.

Depending on your location and industry, you may be eligible to receive a free vaccination. For more information, please talk to your employer or visit the health website in your local area.

Fruit Growers Victoria Ltd are seeking the assistance of people in the Shepparton community who can speak and read Punjabi (Gurmukhi script), Bahasa Indonesia, or Bislama.

Farm Worker local InfoSheets and Safety Videos are being developed in multiple languages, and we need people willing to check that the translations we have are appropriate and correct.

We also need people to record audio from a translated script.

$100 Gift Cards will be provided to participants for each of the 2 projects (Safety Video audio recording and translation review & Worker InfoSheets translation review).

The Australian Government is making some changes to the PALM scheme! If you are a PALM scheme worker these changes will improve your experience while in Australia. You don’t need to do anything – just keep working with your employer.

Some of the changes mean you will:

>> get more working hours

>> be guaranteed a minimum take home pay after deductions

>> be able to move between employers and worksites to work enough hours

>> receive better support services when you are in Australia.

Following the Annual Wage Review 2023, the Fair Work Commission has announced:
• the National Minimum Wage will be increased to $882.80 per week or $23.23 per hour
• a 5.75% increase to minimum award wages.

The increase applies from the first full pay period starting on or after 1 July 2023.

We’re working to update to our pay tools, website information and resources with the new pay rates. These will be ready for you to access from 1 July 2023.

: The minimum wage will be increased by 5.75 per cent the Fair Work Commission has confirmed.

About 2.5 million Australians are currently on the minimum wage, with the increase set to come into effect from July 1 this year.
