One for the social housing policy nerds!
The Vic Govt have FINALLY released the review into social housing regulation.

We fought for this back in 2020 to ensure equity for public & community housing tenants.

It’s fair to say we’ll take a bit to digest it all, and have more to say later.

In the meantime, happy reading nerds!

The Victorian Government commissioned an independent Social Housing Regulation Review as part of the Big Housing Build to identify future regulatory arrangements that will support the long-term interests of social housing residents and communities.

Throw back to 5 years ago - Labor for Housing’s first parliamentary mention & announcement of our establishment. We’re still here, making grassroots advocacy into party policy and government projects!

The crisis has only gotten worse, but we’re proud to still stand along fighters like Josh Burns, who doesn’t waste a day in seeking housing justice for his community.

Homeownership increase.
Government built and provided housing.
Intergenerational inequity in housing.

These are the key themes Minister Clare O’Neil spoke to at her excellent John Cain Oration.

The task of solving this crisis is massive, but with strong leadership from Minister O’Neil, we’re up for the fight!

A fantastic event hosted by the very brilliant Emma Dawson & Per Capita’s Centre for Equitable Housing. Labor for Housing executive member Gabriel Ng & Co-Convenor Julijana Todorovic were very privileged to attend.

A big privilege to join Housing for the Aged Action Group for the launch of their critical research ‘Not Poor Enough, Not Rich Enough: the Missing Middle’.

There are tens of thousands of older Australian renters who are “too rich” to have access to social housing, but “too poor” to access homeownership or secure housing.

They are the Missing Middle. Security in retirement is predicated on retirees owning their own home - but this isn’t available to everyone.

Labor for Housing wants to see an end to discriminatory lending practices, an expansion of shared equity schemes for this cohort & an introduction of fixed rate mortgages.

Our homeownership target of 75% by 2035 is squarely focussed on ensuring every Australian can access a safe & secure retirement

This is a fantastic announcement that will make a meaningful difference to the lives of millennials and zoomers but we can’t abandon social and affordable housing or our desire to have mandatory inclusionary zoning.

Also - take a bow for announcing in Brighton 👏👏
