Embers can find their way into all sorts of places around your home.

Take a walk around your property and clear away things like:
🍂 Leaves and garden debris
🪵 Wood piles
🌱 Mulch
🪑 Outdoor furniture
🚪 Doormats and other flammable items

These are simple jobs you can start tackling now, before bush fire season arrives.

The more you prepare, the more options you have when conditions change.

GRASS FIRE & PILE BURNS - LONGREACH

Yesterday afternoon Shoalhaven Heads responded alongside crews from West Nowra, Cambewarra and Huskisson to reports of an unknown fire in the Longreach area.

Crews arrived to find multiple piles of vegetation and mulch alight which in the strong winds had caused a subsequent grass fire.

Firefighters from Shoalhaven Heads used our high-volume portable pump to establish a water supply for the incident which required approximately 80,000L of water to contain.

Bush fires don’t always stay where you expect them to.

Embers can travel long distances ahead of a fire and can start new fires well away from the main fire front.

With bush and grass growth around the area, now is a good time to think about your own bush fire risk and what you can do to prepare.

GRASS FIRE - BERRY

Earlier this afternoon crews from the Shoalhaven and Illawarra responded to reports of a grass fire burning in farmland outside of Berry.

Multiple crews worked in windy conditions to contain and extinguish the fire.

A reminder that bush and grass fires can still present a risk outside of the bushfire danger period, particularly at the back end of winter when the landscape begins to dry.

MVA - SHOALHAVEN HEADS

Earlier this afternoon Shoalhaven Heads Pumper responded to a 2x car MVA at the intersection of Golden Hill Avenue.

crews made safe a small fluid spill and managed traffic while the vehicles were removed. Thankfully only a minor accident with no serious injuries.

Thanks to all the members of our community who assisted until the arrival of emergency services.

🏡 COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT SUCCESS 🚒

Not all our work involves lights and sirens! Our community engagement team has been working hard recently delivering multiple information sessions across our Village, specifically focusing on those residents who may be more vulnerable in the event of a fire.

A result of this hard work has been a huge uptake in Home Fire Safety Visit requests, a service that we have been proud to assist with.

In the past month alone, our firefighters have worked alongside our colleagues and neighbours from Fire and Rescue NSW Station 224 Berry to deliver over 30 home fire safety visits in Shoalhaven Heads.

This work plays a vital role in keeping our communities safe, and we couldn’t be prouder of the outcomes that our inter-agency efforts have achieved.
