🚒 Nowra Mitigation in Jindabyne 🚒

Over the past few days, crews from Nowra Mitigation have been working hard in the Jindabyne region carrying out maintenance and mitigation works along the Crackenback Fire Trail.

With the valuable assistance of Cooma Mitigation and the Wollondibby RFS appliance, crews have been improving access and helping ensure the trail remains operational for firefighting and emergency response activities ahead of future fire seasons.

These works play an important role in supporting firefighter safety, improving access for appliances, and strengthening preparedness across the region’s remote bushfire-prone areas.

A huge thank you to all personnel involved for their teamwork, effort, and dedication out on the ground. 👏🔥

HAZARDOUS TREES 🪾🔥

When mitigation crews are preparing hazard reduction burns, one of the final steps is to identify hazardous trees within the burn area.

Crews get to work creating a small barrier around the base of these trees to provide separation and reduce the chance of fire entering, potentially causing the tree or limbs to drop and injure crews working on the fireground.

Where possible, crews also work to protect and cut around habitat trees/trees with hollows and preserve grounded logs that may provide shelter to wildlife.

The photos below are great examples of what we look for, what we do, and how it works!

HAZARD REDUCTION BURN (FLOOD HR, SUSSEX INLET)🔥

The Nowra Mitigation Team was involved in the recent hazard reduction burn at Sussex Inlet, working right through from preparation to burning.

Our crews cut 4-metre control lines around the perimeter, identified hazardous trees within the burn area that posed a potential risk to firefighters on the ground and cut around them to prevent impact from fire, and assisted with lighting and managing the burn yesterday.

Working alongside dedicated volunteer firefighters from brigades across the Shoalhaven, crews successfully burnt approximately 10 hectares of bushland.

This important work helps reduce fuel loads and increase protection for surrounding communities and the environment.

HUSKISSON NEIGHBOURHOOD SAFER PLACE

Nowra mitigation crews have been working hard recently after a pocket of vegetation located within a close proximity to the Huskisson Neighbourhood Safer Place (NSP) was identified as a hazard.

A neighbourhood safer place is a designated area for communities to move to (a last resort in the case of a bushfire emergency). In this area, the NSP is Huskisson Public school.

Crews worked to reduce the fuel load in this area, ensuring there is separation between the NSP and nearby vegetation.

🔥The team removed approximately 14.5 tonnes of green waste in total from this area! 🔥

🚫 FIRE PERMITS SUSPENDED – SHOALHAVEN 🚫
Until Tuesday 2 December

✖️ The Shoalhaven is expected to experience HIGH fire danger conditions for the next several days. Because of this, all fire permits issued by the NSW RFS are now suspended across the district.

📝 If you currently have a permit, you must not undertake any burning during this suspension period. Doing so may result in enforcement action and fines.

💨 With the ongoing windy and dry conditions, fire can spread quickly and pose a real risk to our community. Please take extra care with the use of fire and report any unattended or suspicious fire activity.

🔥 ONE EMBER CAN END IT 🔥
Embers can travel long distances and start new fires well ahead of the main front. Sadly, we continue to see preventable ignitions—some accidental, some careless. Let’s work together to reduce the risk

*****REVISED FIRE WEATHER FORECAST***** WEDNESDAY

The BoM has updated our fire weather forecast - EXTREME fire danger conditions are now forecast for tomorrow (Wednesday November 26) with deteriorating conditions from mid-morning.

Isolated rainfall over the weekend has been of benefit, however given the gusty, warm and dry conditions bush and grass fires will likely be difficult to contain.

We anticipate elevated fire danger conditions through to Friday, with the possibility of it extending into the weekend.

PERMITS SUSPENDED

Permits will be suspended from tonight through to Friday - we will review the need for an extended suspension once the weather forecast firms up.

PREPARE NOW

As we saw during the recent Larmer Ave. fire, you need to be PREPARED and ready to act as road closures and warnings may be dynamic. Discuss your plans as a family and know what you will do if a bush for grass fire starts near you.

Report all fires to triple zero '000' and provide your location and a description of the fire and any threats.
