Did you know the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area is the oldest continually surviving tropical rainforest on Earth, with some plant and animal lineages dating back more than 130 million years?

One remarkable group with ancient origins is the dragonflies and damselflies, with one of the world’s
largest dragonflies with a wingspan of 160mm still lives in the Wet Tropics today. Their ancestors have been around since the time when Earth’s land was joined together as one giant supercontinent called Pangaea. In fact, dragonflies existed long before the dinosaurs, surviving and adapting for 300 million years.

The Wet Tropics is home to over 150 species of dragonflies and damselflies, all belonging to the ancient order Odonata, and they vary beautifully in size, colour, and form.

You may spot them throughout the entire Skyrail experience. Be sure to ask a Ranger about them when you join a Ranger Guided Tour at Red Peak / Guriguri Bunda: Our Rangers love sharing their knowledge of the ancient rainforest and its incredible flora and fauna.

On World Bee Day, and every day, we’re proud to highlight the vital role bees play in our environment through education, research and community connection. 🐝

Through the Skyrail Rainforest Foundation, we’ve supported funding recipient Holly Farnan in her bee research, helped hundreds of festivalgoers at Eco Events Cairns Ecofiesta learn about bees and create bee hotels to take home, installed bee hotels at Skyrail, and shared stories about bees with our local community through Cairns Libraries.

We’re pleased to continue sharing the importance of bees through initiatives that support learning, discovery and awareness.
