Couldn’t think of a more deserving recipient. A true gentleman who we at the Somerset Fire Brigade have been lucky to work closely with for a large number of years! Well done Bruce!

Two dogs have been rescued from a public housing unit after a fire broke out on Kentish Drive at Shorewell Park in Burnie this morning.

Tasmania Fire Service received a Triple Zero call about 10.30am after smoke was seen coming from the unit’s eaves.

Firefighters from Burnie and Somerset removed the dogs from the home, gave them oxygen and checked if flames had spread to a neighbouring unit.

Tasmania Police closed Kentish Drive and asked drivers to avoid the area while emergency crews worked at the scene.

Just a short post to express appreciation to our volunteers. Thank you for all that you do for our community.

Volunteering for the Somerset isn’t just about fighting fires—it’s about being part of something bigger, both for the community and yourself.

If you’re considering it, the big question isn’t “am I qualified?”—it’s “am I willing to show up, learn, and be part of a team when it matters?”

Tasmania Fire Service has an important message to its 4500+ volunteers during National Volunteer Week - thank you!

With the theme ‘Your Year to Volunteer’ this week is a time for us to appreciate every volunteer, and the families and employers that support them, for their ongoing commitment.

Our dedicated volunteers play a valuable role in assisting to protect lives. Together they make a difference supporting and connecting our communities and helping to keep them and our environment safe.

Today we celebrate St Florian’s Day — a day that recognises the courage, sacrifice, and dedication of firefighters everywhere.

At Somerset Fire Brigade, we’re proud of our members who turn out at all hours, in all conditions, to protect our community. Whether it’s fire, rescue, or supporting one another through tough times, their commitment never wavers.

But today is also about the families behind the firefighters. The partners, kids, and loved ones who share the burden — the late nights, the interrupted meals, the uncertainty — and still stand strong. Your support makes everything we do possible.

To our brigade members and your families: thank you. Your service, resilience, and community spirit do not go unnoticed.

Stay safe, look after each other, and take a moment today to reflect on what it means to serve.

🔥 Reminder: Always supervise your burn-offs 🔥

Conditions across Tasmania remain dry, so it’s important to take extra care with any outdoor burning.

While Fire Permits are not currently required, people are encouraged to register burns in advance with Tasmania Fire Service by calling 1800 000 699.

Registering a burn will ensure your local brigade are aware of your plans should they need to respond, and you will prevent having a brigade turn up unnecessarily.

If you’re planning to burn:
• Always have an adult in attendance until the fire is completely extinguished
• Be prepared to manage the fire and monitor changing weather conditions
• Have suitable, working firefighting equipment on hand
• Never light fires in peat, humus or marram grass
• Let your neighbours know—smoke can impact health and farming operations (especially vineyards)

Before you leave any fire:
👉 Soak it.
👉 Stir it.
👉 Soak it again.

Also think carefully when lighting campfires or using machinery, and double check that recent fires (including fire pits) are fully out.

⚠️ Remember: Landowners are responsible for any damage caused by fires that escape their property.
📞 If you see signs of a fire re-igniting (smoke or flames), call Triple Zero (000) immediately.

Stay informed and prepared:
• Fire danger ratings: https://www.fire.tas.gov.au/fire-danger-rating/
• Prepare your property and bushfire plan: https://bushfire.tas.gov.au/

🔥 The 2025/26 Fire Permit Period will end statewide tomorrow (Thursday, 9 April 2026).

ℹ️ From 2am tomorrow, if you’re considering burning on your property:
🤝 you don’t require a fire permit
🤝 BUT we encourage you to register your burn by calling 1800 000 699. Registering your burn will ensure your local Tasmania Fire Service brigade are aware of your plans and can respond accordingly.

📍 Remember:
➡️ Anyone conducting a burn must be capable of managing the fire and be mindful of changing weather conditions.
➡️ Make sure an adult is always attending the burn until it is fully extinguished.
➡️ Have suitable working firefighting equipment available to appropriately manage fire activity in the event that the fire begins to spread.
➡️ Never light fires in peat, humus, or marram grass.
➡️ Landowners are responsible for any damage caused by fires escaping their land.
➡️ Ensure your neighbours are aware and that your burn won’t adversely affect their health, or farming operations – particularly the wine industry, which is vulnerable to smoke.
➡️ Burning on private property is governed by local council by-laws and environmental laws about smoke emissions.

The team at Somerset Fire Brigade spent their training night at Three Mile Line training ground honing their skills in a number of urban fire scenarios. We train like this so if something happens in our community we are prepared to act with confidence, precision, and teamwork when it matters most.

Proud of the dedication our members show in continually building their skills to keep our community safe. 🚒🔥
