Using someone's preferred pronouns is one of the easiest ways to make them feel respected, included and valued.

When people share their pronouns, they're letting others know how they would like to be referred to. Taking the time to get pronouns right helps create safer and more welcoming spaces for everyone.

(and every day)! 💜

How much do you know about CMV? CMV (short for cytomegalovirus) is the most common virus passed from mother to baby during pregnancy - and a known cause of deafness and cerebral palsy.

For most people, CMV causes only mild flu-like symptoms or no symptoms at all but if a woman catches CMV for the first time while pregnant, there is a chance it can be passed on to their unborn baby.

There is no vaccine, so preventing the spread of CMV in vulnerable groups is the only form of protection.

Follow these 5 simple steps to reduce the risk of CMV infection during pregnancy (or tag a pregnant family member or friend to help raise awareness.)

True or false?

If a child is choking on food and coughing, you should encourage them to continue coughing instead of starting back blows.

Comment ❤️ for True and
😠 for False

See your child choking can be really overwhelming, but knowing the first aid basics can make a huge difference.

Congratulations to optometrist Dr Shelley Hopkins, recipient of the 2026 Children’s Health Queensland Medal of Distinction for Community Impact.

Dr Hopkins, a Senior Lecturer in Optometry and Vision Science at Queensland University of Technology (QUT), has worked in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and regional health services for more than 15 years to establish sustainable, community-led outreach programs and improve children's learning, wellbeing and future opportunities.

Through her work with the QUT Health Clinics Children's Outreach Optometry Team, Dr Hopkins has helped remove common barriers to care by delivering school-based vision screening, free glasses and ongoing support for communities.

She has also developed QUT's rural and remote work-integrated learning program, which combines clinical placements with outreach service delivery, ensuring future practitioners have the skills, adaptability, and cultural competence they need to deliver equitable, responsive care.

"Thank you so much for all the support. You have helped a lot of people grow to be better people. You are all amazing!"

It's feedback like this that helped the Dakabin Youth Hub team (Alysha Steel, pictured from left, Alkyra Roginson-Hopkins, Heidi Cable and Michelle Maunder) secure the Children's Choice Team Award at our recent staff Excellence Awards for 2026.

Nominated by the young people they support at Dakabin State High School, this award recognises the team's commitment to creating a safe and welcoming space where young people feel supported, respected and empowered.

Whether it's helping someone through a tough day, building confidence, developing leadership skills or supporting pathways to education and wellbeing, the team's impact reaches beyond the hub's walls.

Opened in 2025, the purpose-built facility, built within the grounds of Dakabin State High School was developed through a partnership between Children’s Health Queensland and the of Education.

Co-designed with students and the school community, the Hub aims to provide a space for students to meet, connect with health and social services when they need them, and access educational and training programs that support their long-term growth and wellbeing.

Thirteen-year-old Jericho has spent his fair share of time in hospital. He was born prematurely at 28 weeks and at the age of 4 was diagnosed with Marfan syndrome, a genetic disorder that affects the body's connective tissue (which holds the body together). The condition can impact many parts of the body, including the heart and blood vessels, bones and joints, eyes, skin, and lungs.

Over the years, Jericho has had several surgeries, including operations on his eyes and, more recently, major surgery to correct severe scoliosis. To prepare for the scoliosis surgery, Jericho was fitted with a halo frame to help stretch his spine and had to spend three weeks in the Queensland Children's Hospital while the halo was monitored. To keep boredom at bay during this time, Jericho taught himself to play the piano on the hospital's pianos. Listening to him play today, it's hard to believe he’s never had a lesson. 🎹
