We loved reading your volunteer stories over National Volunteer Week 2024! We too are proud to champion the theme ‘Something for Everyone’ this year, recognising each volunteer’s potential in finding a space that harnesses their skills and passions.

Our volunteer story spotlight lands on Melbourne based volunteer Jessica, who has flexed her leadership skills time and time again in support of her children's local primary school.

From massive fetes, to parent celebration days, to much more, Jessica is well known for her generosity as a volunteer and ability to coordinate hundreds of fellow volunteers to benefit the wider school community.

For Jessica, volunteering is an important part of staying true to her family values stating that it "gives me a profound sense of purpose and pride, I love building a strong, supportive community. Volunteering also lets me show my young children the joy of giving and the importance of looking out for each other.”

A huge thank you to local heroes like Jessica who enrich our communities every day by giving back!

Our UK-based Stakeholder Development Manager, Flo Eynon recently attended a Discovering the Power of Volunteering event hosted by Volunteer Now & Volunteer Now Enterprises in Belfast. Keynote speakers included Denise Hayward, CEO, Volunteer Now, Martin J Cowling and Rob Jackson.

Flo’s key take aways from the event included:

- Shifts in volunteering: people prefer virtual volunteering since COVID, roles that align to passions and want to build skills rather than just ‘helping out’.

- Volunteer recruitment strategies need to align to this new wave of volunteers (aka. go digital).

- Rewarding volunteers is a key element in any volunteer retention strategy.

- Evolve with the changing volunteer landscape: participants were provided useful tips and insights into online marketing beyond hard copy fliers.

If you’re located in Northern Ireland, Volunteer Now is your first port of call for support with volunteer recruitment and retention. If you’re located elsewhere in the UK, New Zealand or Australia, we’re always happy to help. Simply reach out!

Our own Dannika White, Director Stakeholder & Community Development, took to the stage today to speak at the 2023 National Volunteering Conference in Canberra. Today is Te Rā o Waitangi (Waitangi Day). This day commemorates Te Tiriti ō Waitangi (The Treaty of Waitangi) as a significant document in the history of Aotearoa New Zealand.

It’s a day to reflect on what Te Tiriti means to us both as individuals and as an organisation. If you would like more information about Te Tiriti’s important role in shaping Aotearoa New Zealand, we think the He Tohu exhibition is a good place to start: https://natlib.govt.nz/he-tohu/about/te-tiriti-o-waitangi

If you're in Aotearoa New Zealand, please let us know what you did today in the comments below.
