The forum provided a platform to explore Sri Lanka’s investment opportunities, capital market potential and prospects for stronger economic collaboration between Sri Lanka and Australia.

On the sideline of the “Invest Sri Lanka” Investment Forum, held in Melbourne from 18–21 August 2026, the Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Melbourne facilitated business meetings for the Deputy Minister of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development of Sri Lanka, Chathuranga Abeysinghe.

During the meetings, the Deputy Minister engaged with prospective Australian companies that have expressed interest in investing in Sri Lanka across a range of sectors, including food and beverages, energy, manufacturing, logistics, technology and tourism.

The Deputy Minister provided an update on emerging opportunities in Sri Lanka and highlighted the country’s ongoing economic recovery, as well as the progress being made towards achieving renewed sustainable economic growth.

The meetings provided an important platform to explore opportunities for increased bilateral trade and investment, encourage Australian-based Sri Lankan businesses to expand their operations and investments in Sri Lanka, and identify potential areas for collaboration between the Sri Lankan Government and the Australian business community. The companies participated in the meetings included the “Esprit Bentota”, Earth System, Elegant Media, ThiRU Labs and Acacia Hotel Services.

Associated with the Deputy Minister at the meeting were Consul General, Pradeepa Saram and Consul Fazil Farook.

The Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Melbourne in collaboration with the China Chamber of Commerce of Australia (CCCA), Melbourne Branch facilitated a high level business engagement between the Deputy Minister of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development of Sri Lanka and Victorian-based leading Chinese conglomerates on 19 August 2026. The Deputy Minister was visiting Melbourne from 18-21 August 2026 attending “Invest Sri Lanka” Investor Forum.

The event brought together leading Victoria-based Chinese business conglomerates representing a range of sectors, including finance, logistics and services, providing an opportunity to exchange views on strengthening economic and commercial engagement between Sri Lanka and Victoria.

Mr. Bian Lei, President of the Victoria Chapter of the China Chamber of Commerce in Australia, welcomed the Deputy Minister of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development and appreciated his engagement with leading Chinese business representatives in Victoria. He noted the interest among participating companies in exploring prospective investment opportunities and developing mutually beneficial economic partnerships with Sri Lanka.

The Deputy Minister outlined investment opportunities available in Sri Lanka across a range of sectors, including agriculture, mineral sands, shipping and logistics and highlighted opportunities available through the CHEC Port City Colombo, inviting Victorian-based Chinese companies to consider establishing regional headquarters and expanding their operations through Sri Lanka.

Deputy Minister Abeysinghe also invited members of the China Chamber of Commerce in Australia to participate in Sri Lanka EXPO 2027 to explore potential partnerships, investment opportunities and avenues for expanded bilateral trade and business cooperation.

Deputy Minister Abeysinghe was accompanied by Consul General Pradeepa Saram and Consul Fazil Farook at the meeting.

The Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Melbourne organised “Sri Lanka Expo 2027” promotional event on 14 August at the Consulate, bringing together Australian- Sri Lankan business stakeholders to explore trade, investment and business opportunities in Sri Lanka. The event was attended by Mr. Mangala Wijesinghe, Chairman, Export Development Board and the Director General of the Board of Investment, Dr. Sulakshana Jayawardena.

Victoria-based companies with an expressed interest in participating at Sri Lanka Expo 2027 attended the promotional programme. The participant companies represented sectors including food and beverage, logistics, financial services, tourism and wellness. Further, Victoria-based importers representing leading Sri Lankan food and beverage brands also participated, providing an important opportunity to address issues related to importers which are negatively affected to bilateral trade between Sri Lanka and Australia.

Pradeepa Saram, Consul General highlighted Sri Lanka Expo 2027, to be held at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH), Colombo, from 14–17 January 2027, as one of the country’s largest international business events and invited Australian and Sri Lankan business entities to make full use of the Expo as a platform to establish new business partnerships.

Chairman of the Export Development Board, Managala Wijesinghe made a detailed presentation on EXPO-2027 to the attendees outlining the opportunities available for international buyers, exporters and investors to connect with Sri Lankan companies and explore new commercial partnerships.

The Director General of the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka, Dr. Sulakshana Jayawardena, briefed participants on investment opportunities available in Sri Lanka, particularly in the industry, energy and mineral sectors and explained the investor-friendly packages, incentives and other benefits available to foreign investors seeking to establish or expand operations in Sri Lanka.

The discussion also focused on the practical challenges faced by Victoria-based importers of Sri Lankan products. Importers raised concerns regarding lengthy procedures in obtaining Plant Quarantine & phytosanitary certification when importing goods from Sri Lanka. The EDB Chairman assured the participants that a meeting would be convened with the relevant line-agencies to identify solutions and streamline the process.

The promotional event underscored the Consulate General’s continued efforts to strengthen Sri Lanka–Australia trade and investment relations and expand business-to-business engagement.

Minister of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development of Sri Lanka, Hon. Sunil Handunneththi, attended Sri Lankan Entrepreneurs’ Night 2026, organised by the Australia - Sri Lanka Business Forum (ASLBF) in Melbourne on 15 August 2026. The event brought together a cross-section of Sri Lankan and Australian entrepreneurs, business leaders and community representatives, providing a platform to strengthen business links and explore opportunities for greater economic engagement between Sri Lanka and Australia.

The gathering was also addressed by Cassandra Fernando, Federal Member for Holt and Pradeepa Saram, Sri Lankan Consul General in Victoria.

Addressing the gathering, Minister Handunneththi commended the Australia - Sri Lanka Business Forum for its efforts to bring together the Sri Lankan business community in Australia and urged Sri Lankan entrepreneurs in Australia to support the development of Sri Lanka’s industrial and technology sectors. The Minister also invited overseas entrepreneurs to bring investment, expertise and international experience to Sri Lanka.

Consul General Pradeepa Saram underscored that the participation of the Minister and senior officials responsible for industry, exports and investment demonstrated the significance the Government of Sri Lanka attaches to engaging with Sri Lankan business networks overseas.

The Chairman of the Export Development Board (EDB) made a detailed presentation on EXPO Sri Lanka 2027, Sri Lanka's premier international trade exhibition, scheduled to be held in Colombo. He invited Australian businesses to participate in the exhibition and explore new opportunities for trade, investment, partnerships and business collaboration with Sri Lankan enterprises. Director General of the Board of Investment (BOI) briefed the participants on investment opportunities available in Sri Lanka.

The Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Melbourne continues to work closely with SL- related business organisations, bilateral chambers and other stakeholders in Victoria to promote Sri Lanka as a destination for trade and investment and to facilitate stronger business-to-business linkages between the two countries.

Strengthening Sri Lanka–Australia Trade and Investment Linkages

The Consul General of Sri Lanka Pradeepa Saram met with Mr. Lei Bian, Vice President of China Chamber of Commerce in Australia and President of Melbourne Branch (CCCA) at the Consulate General in Melbourne to discuss opportunities to further strengthen trade, investment and business cooperation Between Sri Lanka and Victoria. During the meeting, Consul General invited CCCA Melbourne’ to consider participating in EXPO Sri Lanka 2027, Sri Lanka’s premier international trade exhibition, as international buyers, exporters and investors. CCCA Melbourne agreed to make its business partners aware of the opportunities presented by the Expo and encourage their participation.

The CCCA, Melbourne branch President was also briefed on the Port City Colombo and invited CCCA members to explore new opportunities being developed in Port City Colombo. Discussions also included facilitating meetings between a Port City Colombo delegation and CCCA members during the delegation’s visit to Melbourne later this month.

The CCCA Melbourne agreed to facilitate B2B matchmaking meetings for the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce business delegation, which will visit Melbourne from 23–27 August 2026.The engagement forms part of the Consulate General’s ongoing efforts to promote Sri Lanka’s trade, investment and business opportunities in Australia and to build stronger connections between the two countries’ business communities.
