ForestLearning

ForestLearning We provide teachers with quality teaching resources aligned to the Aust. Curriculum and with a focus on Australian forests & sustainable timber products.

ForestLearning.edu.au educational resources provide insights into how certified sustainably managed Australian productive forests play a vital role in the provision of forest and wood products and environmental services for society. From how Australian forests deliver timber to produce renewable goods that many of us use on a daily basis, provide habitats for biodiversity and recreational spaces,

and provide employment opportunities through active management operations that help sustain rural communities. To how forests help protect water quality through stabilising soils, and help combat global carbon emissions and air pollution through the storage of carbon in trees and wood products. These resources have been developed by experienced educators aligning with the Australian Curriculum and current pedagogical practices and supported by the members of the Australian Forest Education Alliance.

🌲 From waste wood to future homes

How can we tackle housing shortages while reducing waste?

This short video from WoodCentral explores a world-first, innovative Australian, multi-patented timber system that repurposes peeler cores—by-products from veneer manufacturing used around the world—into strong, efficient building materials for housing and midrise buildings.

It’s a powerful real-world example of how sustainable design, waste recovery, recycling and material innovation can work together to address big challenges.

Perfect for the classroom to explore:
• Housing and liveability
• Sustainable resource use and the circular economy
• Design thinking in action
• The role of renewable materials like timber

ForestLearning was proud to organise this recent visit to Ryde Secondary College, bringing Responsible Wood and Geography students together for some great conversations about what is sustainable forest management.

From ecosystem services and global case studies to certification and career pathways, students asked thoughtful questions and really engaged with the big issues shaping our forests.

Thanks to the staff and students for having us — we’re looking forward to continuing the conversation!

Are ForestLearning resources a strong fit for teaching geography? 🤔

Hear from Geography Teacher, Paul McCartan about what he likes about ForestLearning resources, and why teaching about forests in the geography curriculum is so important. 🌲🌳

Teaching land use, natural resources, water, climate, mapping or how industries link to communities? ForestLearning connects these concepts to real examples from Australia’s forests and wood products sector.

With curriculum aligned lessons, real data, case studies and inquiry tasks, students build skills in analysing, mapping and thinking critically about people and places.

Sustainability Challenge Day 🌲

Last Friday, ForestLearning journeyed to the Coastal Academy of STEM Excellence Sustainability Hub Challenge at Kingscliff High School with Hurford's Education Officer, Mia Cassidy.

We had a blast hosting the Forest Trail STEM Scavenger Hunt where students discovered how climate influences different forest tree species on a trail walk. ☀️🌳 A big thanks to Mia, who brought the trail to life by sharing her inspiring journey as a forester and the vital forest stewardship work she does every day.

Teachers walked away with our ForestLearning Teacher Packs filled with classroom goodies, and awards were handed out for creative STEM projects using renewable wood products such as nesting boxes and sustainable wood designs.

It’s inspiring to see young people discovering how forests when managed sustainably provide us with renewable, sustainable solutions for the planets future. 🌲💡
