Today and always, we remember Velvet Pesu, a woman whose remarkable spirit was grounded in love, generosity, and deep care for others.

Velvet had a rare gift. She gave freely and wholeheartedly, her time, her music, her art, her warmth, her laughter, and her hugs. She loved without condition and never asked for anything in return. To know Velvet was to feel seen, welcomed, and cared for.

Velvet was a devoted mother who adored her daughters, and her love for them was evident in everything she did. Music and art were not just passions for Velvet; they were expressions of her generosity, shared openly with our community and woven into so many moments of connection.

Velvet was a founding member of Jacaranda Housing and a member of the Inner West Housing Co-Operative, which merged with Jacaranda in 2012. Her commitment to community, belonging, and care for others helped shape the values that continue to guide us today.

Velvet will always be remembered for her kindness and generosity, for the way she loved everyone, for her gentle strength, and for her unwavering belief in everyone.

We will never forget you, Velvet.
We will miss your laugh, your hugs, and your beautiful spirit.

Our community is stronger when it includes all of us.

People who own their homes, those renting privately, and those supported by community housing all deserve to live safely and with dignity, side by side.

We believe that every community should have a home for everyone because housing is a human right, and everyone deserves to be welcomed.đź’ś

Which door will you walk through?

The door that opens to a future where everyone has a place to call home, a door built on empathy, inclusion, and support for Queenslanders without a safe and secure home?

Or the door that says “Yes, we need more affordable housing… just not in my street, not in my suburb, not in my community.”

We’re at a crossroads. The housing crisis won’t be solved with good intentions alone. It takes action and the courage to stand up for Queenslanders. It takes saying yes, even when it’s in your neighbourhood.

Because the truth is, everyone deserves a safe and secure home. The hospitality worker who serves your morning coffee. The retail assistant managing the night shift crew. The woman rebuilding her life after violence. The older person who can’t keep up with rising rents.

Let’s choose the door that leads to dignity, safety, and a home for everyone.

Affordable. Affordable. Affordable.

Not a typo, just a deliberate reminder of what we must prioritise if we want thriving, inclusive, and resilient communities.

Affordable housing is not just about shelter.
It’s the teacher who lives near their school.
The aged care worker who supports our elders.
The nurse working long shifts at the local hospital.
The early-career police officer serving the community.
The mature-aged student changing careers and starting fresh.
The young family building a future.
The neighbour who volunteers at the local footy club.
It’s your mum, dad, sister, daughter, son, your family, or friend who needs a home to live a great life.

It is the social fabric that weaves us together, diverse, connected, and compassionate.

Without affordable housing, we risk unravelling that fabric, excluding people from the places they belong.

We need policies that match the urgency of the housing crisis. Partnerships that go beyond talk. And action that keeps the word affordable from becoming meaningless.

Let’s keep saying it. Let’s keep demanding it. Let’s keep building it.

Today, we pause to remember the grief, trauma, and loss experienced by the Stolen Generations, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who were forcibly removed from their families, communities, culture, and Country.

We acknowledge the ongoing impacts of these policies, and we honour the strength and resilience of First Nations families, communities, and cultures.

National Sorry Day is a time for truth-telling. It reminds us of the importance of listening, learning, and solidarity with First Nations people as we work towards justice, healing, and meaningful reconciliation.

🖤💛❤️ We remember. We acknowledge. We walk alongside you.
