On Monday night, Blue Mtns Police Rescue, together with NSW Ambulance Special Operations Paramedics were called to Pierces Pass near Mt Wilson, after reports that two rock-climbers needed assistance. Information was vague, due to very poor mobile reception in the area. On arrival, police rescue deployed specialist resources, including a RPAS (drone) fitted with night capabilities. With the use of this technology, the two climbers were quickly located, 120m down the cliff-face. The RPAS was then used to conduct an assessment of the site to enable operators to form a plan to safely access and extricate the climbers.
Having acces to this technology and the skills to interpret the data is invaluable for our teams to be able to plan and compete these types of operations. NSWPF Rescue & Bomb Disposal Unit has a network of sectors across the State, all equipped with RPAS capabilities, including trained pilots and a range of aircraft options, that can be deployed for SAR, technical rescue and in support of other operations. Combined with extensive training and experience in remote-area missions and complex vertical rescue, and the latest equipment technologies, our teams are able to operate safely and efficiently in the most difficult cliff and wilderness environments, day or night and in a range of conditions.
The use of the RPAS on this mission was critical in quickly locating the climbers in distress and accessing them. Once accessed, they were safely raised to the cliff-top and then walked out of the bush. The pair were uninjured, but certainly not prepared for an unplanned night on the cliff, highlighting the importance of planning for the unexpected when venturing into remote or wilderness environments.
