Glenbrook Train Disaster 25 years on

On this day in 1999 at Glenbrook in the Blue Mountains, an interurban train collided with the rear carriage of the Sydney bound Indian-Pacific train. The force of the impact compressed six meters of the lead interurban carriage. As a result of the collision, 7 people were killed and 51 passengers were injured.

Blue Mountains Police Rescue were the first rescue unit on site, shortly followed by local Fire and Rescue stations from Fire and Rescue NSW station 301 Glenbrook, Fire and Rescue NSW 86 Station Penrith, and Fire and Rescue NSW Station 445 Springwood. The 51 injured passengers were removed from the train, triaged, and transported to hospital in a collaborative effort between the rescue services and the NSW Ambulance.

The recovery of the 7 fatalities from the wreckage, however, took several hours of arduous work by composite teams of Police Rescue Operators and fire fighters.

We take a moment on days like this to remember those who were lost, and to honour those that took part in what can only be described as a significant and confronting scene to arrive at.

**Know the risks and be prepared**
Blue Mountains Police Rescue responded to two separate incidents in Dalpura Canyon last week, requiring substantial rescue efforts. The incidents highlighted issues relating to both of the groups preparedness for bushwalking and canyon exploration, including the fact both groups started late in the afternoon. Dalpura Canyon is one of a number of areas in the Blue Mountains that has seen a significant increase in visitation in recent years, driven by the accessibility of information on social media and other sources. Whilst police encourage people to get out and about into the bush and experience nature, adventurers need to be aware of their own experience and fitness level and select activities in line with their limitations. Don't be the next person to need help, just because the photo looks amazing on social media. When planning outdoor adventures, choose your adventure carefully and please follow T.R.E.K https://www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/safety/bushwalking-safety/think-before-you-trek
Keep in mind that the more remote the location, the longer it will take for help to get to you and may mean an unplanned overnight stay.
Comments will be monitored.

On Monday night, Blue Mtns Police Rescue, together with NSW Ambulance Special Operations Paramedics were called to Pierces Pass near Mt Wilson, after reports that two rock-climbers needed assistance. Information was vague, due to very poor mobile reception in the area. On arrival, police rescue deployed specialist resources, including a RPAS (drone) fitted with night capabilities. With the use of this technology, the two climbers were quickly located, 120m down the cliff-face. The RPAS was then used to conduct an assessment of the site to enable operators to form a plan to safely access and extricate the climbers.

Having acces to this technology and the skills to interpret the data is invaluable for our teams to be able to plan and compete these types of operations. NSWPF Rescue & Bomb Disposal Unit has a network of sectors across the State, all equipped with RPAS capabilities, including trained pilots and a range of aircraft options, that can be deployed for SAR, technical rescue and in support of other operations. Combined with extensive training and experience in remote-area missions and complex vertical rescue, and the latest equipment technologies, our teams are able to operate safely and efficiently in the most difficult cliff and wilderness environments, day or night and in a range of conditions.

The use of the RPAS on this mission was critical in quickly locating the climbers in distress and accessing them. Once accessed, they were safely raised to the cliff-top and then walked out of the bush. The pair were uninjured, but certainly not prepared for an unplanned night on the cliff, highlighting the importance of planning for the unexpected when venturing into remote or wilderness environments.

Great News!!!! After a 24 hour rescue operation, Blue Mountains Police Rescue coordinated a difficult search and rescue for a missing bushwalker. At 10:30am the bushwalker was located in a tasking area given to the NSW SES Bush Search and Rescue Unit. Although cold and wet the female is reported to be in good spirits while the rescue operation continues to walk her out. We wish to thank everyone who assisted and all the organizations who assisted.
