NOTICE OF PROPOSED HAZARD REDUCTION
Please be advised that crews from NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service are intending to undertake Hazard Reduction (HR) burning, weather permitting, at the following location this week.

Location: Blackburn Road Wedderburn. Near
Day: Tuesday 12 May 2026

This hazard reduction burn is approximately 38ha in size.

As the prescribed burn will generate smoke, hot embers and heat, it is important that you consider the following:
• Keep doors and windows closed to prevent smoke entering homes;
• Keep outdoor furniture under cover to prevent ember burns;
• Retract pool covers to prevent ember damage;
• Remove washing from clotheslines;
• Ensure pets have a protected area;
• If you are driving a vehicle, slow down, keep windows up and turn headlights on; and
• If you have asthma or a lung condition, reduce outdoor activities. If smoke levels are high and if shortness of breath or coughing develops, take your reliever medicine or seek medical advice
For health information relating to smoke from bush fires and hazard reduction burning, visit the NSW Health website or Asthma Australia

You can also obtain additional information on prescribed burning and property preparedness by accessing the NSW Rural Fire Service website at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au or download the hazards near me app.

Today we commemorate St Florian, the patron saint of firefighters in the Catholic faith.

In our modern times, St Florian's Day is an international day of remembrance for all firefighters, especially those who have passed away in the line of duty, and those passing away from illness caused by their duty. Typically, award ceremonies for firefighters are also held on this day.

Florian lived in the Roman city of Aelium Cetium, present-day Sankt Pölten, Austria. He joined the Roman Army and advanced in the ranks rising to commander of the imperial army in the Roman province of Noricum. In addition to his military duties, he was also responsible for organizing and leading firefighting brigades. Florian organized and trained an elite group of soldiers whose sole duty was to fight fires.

During the Diocletianic Persecution of Christians, reports reached Rome that Florian was not enforcing the proscriptions against Christians in his territory. Aquilinus was sent to investigate these reports. When Aquilinus ordered Florian to offer sacrifice to the Roman gods in accordance with Roman religion, Florian refused. Florian was sentenced to be burned at the stake. Standing on the funeral pyre, Florian is reputed to have challenged the Roman soldiers to light the fire, saying "If you wish to know that I am not afraid of your torture, light the fire, and in the name of the Lord I will climb onto it."Apprehensive of his words, the soldiers did not burn Florian, but executed him by drowning him in the Enns River with a millstone tied around his neck instead.

Hazard Reduction | 1-2-3 May 2026

Lynwood Park Rural Fire Brigade members assisted with a multi-agency hazard reduction in the Holsworthy Army Range.

Agencies included NSW Rural Fire Service, Fire and Rescue NSW, NSW Ambulance, NSW National Parks, Australian Army, Downer - Defence Contractors and WIRES.

The Berties Hazard Reduction covered 120 hectares on land adjacent to Wedderburn, St Helens Park, Airds and Kentlyn.

Our members crewed the RFS Macarthur Bulk Water Tanker, and assisted within the Incident Management Team, and also with RFS Trail Bike taskings

The Bulk Water Tanker was crewed over 4 shifts, Day & Night Shifts on Friday and Saturday.

Our members also crewed our Category 1 Tanker on standby on station, on Saturday, attending 3 fire calls within the Macarthur area. With numerous Cumberland / Macarthur brigades committed to the burn it was prudent to have the Brigade ready for quick response.

02/05/2026

Firefighters remain on scene today at the Bertie’s Hazard Reduction, continuing operations following the main ignition period on Friday afternoon.

Crews are working to monitor, secure and strengthen containment across the burn area.

Residents in surrounding areas may continue to notice smoke while these activities are underway.

Given the scale and complexity of the operation, work may continue through to Tuesday 5 May, depending on weather and on-ground conditions.

This hazard reduction plays a key role in lowering fuel loads and improving protection for nearby communities ahead of the fire season. We thank the community for their patience and support.

To stay up to date with current activities please visit www.rfs.nsw.gov.au or download the Hazard Near Me app.
