Lithium-ion batteries are all around us, in your phone, laptop, e-bike, e-vehicle, power tools, toys, toothbrushes and smart watches, among others. These batteries represent the fastest growing fire risk in NSW.
Overcharging, non-compliant chargers, dropping/damage, overheating and manufacturing defects can cause a self-sustaining chemical reaction within the batteries. This 'thermal runaway' can result in fire which is hard to extinguish, release of toxic gases and explosion.
Have you considered where these batteries are in your home, and how to minimise the risk? Consider:
- Charging on a non-combustible surface, away from soft furnishing. Good examples are stone benches or concrete garage floors.
- Only use a charger that supplies the correct voltage and current to the device, ideally supplied with the battery. Ensure you are only purchasing from reputable manufacturers.
- Avoid charging overnight or when unattended.
- Avoid extreme heat or moisture when charging or storing.
- Don't charge in an area that may hinder escape in a fire.
- Install an additional smoke alarm where these devices are charged.
Yesterday 446 Stockton responded to a 2nd Alarm structure fire in Tea Gardens, originating from a battery. Everyone was evacuated but the home was destroyed.
If you need help or would like advice on battery safety, you can book a free Home Safety Visit with Fire & Rescue. We will happily assist with smoke alarm checks and replacing batteries if you need help using a ladder. See link below.
