Lithium-ion batteries are all around us, in your phone, laptop, e-bike, e-vehicle, power tools, toys, toothbrushes and smart watches, among others. These batteries represent the fastest growing fire risk in NSW.

Overcharging, non-compliant chargers, dropping/damage, overheating and manufacturing defects can cause a self-sustaining chemical reaction within the batteries. This 'thermal runaway' can result in fire which is hard to extinguish, release of toxic gases and explosion.

Have you considered where these batteries are in your home, and how to minimise the risk? Consider:
- Charging on a non-combustible surface, away from soft furnishing. Good examples are stone benches or concrete garage floors.
- Only use a charger that supplies the correct voltage and current to the device, ideally supplied with the battery. Ensure you are only purchasing from reputable manufacturers.
- Avoid charging overnight or when unattended.
- Avoid extreme heat or moisture when charging or storing.
- Don't charge in an area that may hinder escape in a fire.
- Install an additional smoke alarm where these devices are charged.

Yesterday 446 Stockton responded to a 2nd Alarm structure fire in Tea Gardens, originating from a battery. Everyone was evacuated but the home was destroyed.

If you need help or would like advice on battery safety, you can book a free Home Safety Visit with Fire & Rescue. We will happily assist with smoke alarm checks and replacing batteries if you need help using a ladder. See link below.

446 Stockton responded to a motor vehicle accident on the Stockton bridge on Thursday evening, which closed the bridge northbound. Traffic congestion made access difficult for emergency services from the Newcastle side; while 446 was able to access the scene from the Stockton side. This illustrates the importance of station location for response times and coverage, if an emergency blocks access.

Huge thank you to the members of the public who were first on scene and provided critical support for the patient before emergency services were able to access the scene. An incredible bunch of people including doctors, nurses and first aiders.

Captain Brad from 446 Stockton assisted with driving the ambulance to John Hunter Hospital while paramedics worked with the patient en route.

Please remember to allow additional safe stopping distance while roads are wet.

Widespread rainfall is forecast for the Hunter over the next few days, with the possibility of flooding. Please stay informed as the Newcastle Area catchment may be impacted.

Reminder to please drive to the conditions when roads are wet. Yesterday 446 Stockton attended a complex incident involving a heavy rigid vehicle, electric vehicle and two other vehicles. The response required vehicle stabilisation techniques, hydraulic rescue equipment, extraction for patients trapped in vehicles, assessment and isolation of a damaged EV, fire protection and clean-up. We worked alongside our colleagues from Tech Rescue Fire and Rescue NSW Station 357 Lambton, Fire and Rescue NSW Station 462 Mayfield West, and Duty Commander Newcastle (A Platoon) along with NSW Ambulance, NSW Police and Transport for NSW Traffic Commanders, while Nelson Bay Road was closed. Huge thanks to the guys who respond so quickly and professionally in emergency towing in our area, we appreciate you.

General reminder for safe and defensive driving in the wet (not specific to this incident):
- Safe stopping distances increase in wet conditions. Increase the distance between your vehicle and the one in front to at least 4 seconds.
- If someone is leaving a gap for safe stopping, don't cut in front of them.
- When two lanes merge into one and there are no painted white lines crossing the road, give way to the vehicle ahead of you. Merge like a zip!
- Use your low-beam headlights to maximise visibility.
- Be conscious that young or inexperienced drivers don't have the benefit of years of experience on the roads, so may not respond as quickly or in the way expected. Please allow more space for these drivers and be kind to other road users.

Happy Mothers Day from our crew to all the amazing mums!

We have two proud mums working in our brigade: Deputy Captain Nicole and Retained Firefighter Kelsey. They're both great examples of the strength and balance required to prioritise the important things while working for their community.

It was so nice to have many of our crew mums and families visit the station for Open Day yesterday. We appreciate your support 🥰
