How is this beautiful big girl! I have never personally found a Pygmy perch this big in the 15 years of breeding them.

Another great day for our threatened small bodied natives ❤️

🐟 Big news for one of Victoria’s smallest battlers.

We’ve stocked hundreds of offspring of the critically endangered West Gippsland galaxias in hopes of establishing a second population for the species.

Between 2002 and 2012 this little fish saw its numbers crash by 97 per cent. Today only one known population exists in a tributary of the La Trobe river.

Now, thanks to a breeding breakthrough at our Snobs Creek Conservation Hatchery, love is in the air and we’re starting their journey back from the brink of extinction.

The milestone was made possible thanks to our partnership with DEECA’s Arthur Rylah Institute on our 10inTen plan to recover at least 10 of Victoria’s most at-risk aquatic creatures in as many years.

We were also stoked to have GLaWAC, Middle Creek Farm and Forest Fire Management Victoria join us on the ground to send off these fish, in what we hope will be the first of many releases in years to come.

Funding to find a suitable home for these fish came from Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water’s Saving Native Species Program.

Ever wondered what 1220 Dwarf Galaxias looks like 😛 these are being released tomorrow around Melbourne!

Flatheaded Galaxias, learning new things about these unique fish. I have observed for the second year a type of summer dormancy, they literally stop actively feeding, spend most of their time hiding. Then as soon as the season begins to turn and daylight reduces, they transform into eating machines and smash anything that is put in their tank, here they are feeding on freeze dried blackworms.

Always a great meeting for talking all things fish!
