Strathfield Council

Strathfield Council Strathfield Council is a local government area in Sydney's Inner West. Strathfield Council is a medium sized Council located in Sydney’s Inner West.

The area of the Council comprises approximately 14.1 square kilometres and has an estimated population of 40,000. Strathfield Council has seven councillors, including the Mayor who is elected by the Councillors. The CEO is appointed by the Council to manage the administration of the Council and in turn, the CEO appoints staff within Council. The Mayor of Strathfield Council is Cr Matthew Blackmore

and the CEO is Henry Wong. Strathfield Council has adopted its community strategic plan - Strathfield 2030. The Strathfield 2030 has been developed to provide a preferred vision of the Strathfield community by the year 2030 and articulates the local community's long-term desirable future and a common direction for the Municipality. It ensures that as an organisation Council is better prepared for future challenges. The incorporation of local government in the Strathfield district commenced on June 1885 when the Municipality of Strathfield was incorporated covering the suburbs of Redmire (renamed Strathfield), Homebush and Druitt Town (now part of Strathfield South). The Homebush Municipal Council was incorporated on 13 June 1906 . In 1947, Homebush Municipal Council amalgamated into Strathfield Council. On 1 January 1949, the Municipality of Enfield was abolished and the former West Ward was joined to Strathfield Municipality. Further changes to the structure of local government were made on 1 July 1993, when the NSW Local Government Act took effect. This Act changed the responsibilities of the Mayor and Councillors and separated the functions more clearly from those of the General Manager. The new Act required local government to become more responsible, accountable and transparent in its operations.

Some good news for your Monday afternoon 😃

Despite heavy rain last week, Begnell Field was ready for play on the weekend thanks to the drainage improvements Council made earlier this year! And instead of a muddy swamp, the sport field is looking great, ready for another match.

DID YOU KNOW: That Hudson Park Driving Range is the only Golf Driving Range in the Sydney Inner West?

One of the Strathfield LGA's most popular attractions – the Driving Range is regularly filled with golfers of all ages practicing their swings 🏌️‍♂️

Please note the sale of buckets ceases an hour prior to the closing time of the driving range.

This National Reconciliation Week, you can find the Australian National Flag, the Australian Aboriginal Flag and the Torres Strait Islander Flag flown outside Strathfield Town Hall, and in Davey Squares reserved (pictured).

Flying the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Flags during National Reconciliation Week recognises the significance of this observation for all Australians and is a sign of respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and culture 🖤💛❤️

NOTICE: Playground works at Ford Park, Strathfield South

From 1 June 2026, Council Staff will be improving the playground surface at Ford Park. The playground will be closed until 5 June 2026.

The works will include removal of existing rubber in some sections to repair the subbase and then reinstatement of rubber in these sections. This will improve safety within the playground and elongate the life of the playground surface 😀

Did you know the Strathfield area holds a rich and enduring Aboriginal history?

Strathfield Council has partnered with Murawin to deepen our connection to Country, delivering a comprehensive Understanding Country report for the local community. This important work highlights the evolving landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and deep cultural knowledge that have shaped the area over time.

At its heart, the report shares the story of the Wanne people, the traditional custodians of this land, exploring their customs, traditions, and ways of life that continue to resonate today. By strengthening our understanding of Aboriginal histories, we can better respect, recognise and celebrate the ongoing connection to Country across Strathfield 🖤💛❤️
