This week, we're experiencing warmer than average temperatures across Queensland. ๐Ÿฅต

Severe heat can make you feel sick. Heat-related illness can also be dangerous, and in some cases, deadly.

Symptoms you may experience include feeling dizzy, having a headache, feeling nauseous, wanting to drink water, or even vomiting. ๐Ÿค’

Hereโ€™s how to keep you and your family safe:
๐Ÿ’ง drink 6-8 glasses of water each day
๐Ÿ“ฑ check in on loved ones regularly (especially older adults and pregnant women)
๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ avoid heavy exercise during the hottest parts of the day (11am - 3pm)
๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ keep cool in air conditioning or find a shaded or cool spot to rest
๐Ÿ˜Ž be sun safe (wear a hat, sunglasses, long sleeves and apply sunscreen every two hours).

If you, or someone you know, start feeling unwell due to the heat:
๐Ÿ‘‰ Call 13 HEALTH for medical advice or visit your doctor
๐Ÿ‘‰ In an emergency, call Triple Zero (000) immediately.

Checking your skin regularly is the best way to pick up changes that could indicate skin cancer.

Although you may think you know yourself pretty well, there are nooks and crannies that are easily missed if you don't do a thorough check.

It's important to develop a regular habit of checking your own skin, so you can spot any changes if and when they appear. Take a look at our tips below.๐Ÿ‘‡

It's recommended to get an annual skin check, regardless of noticing any changes. If you do notice any changes, a new spot or are concerned about your skin, speak to your GP as soon as possible.

Many of us rely on things like drinking and smoking to make us feel better. What we're actually chasing though, is a chemical rush. ๐Ÿงช

When we do certain things, our brain releases chemicals (neurotransmitters) that affect how we feel. Our feel-good chemicals include:

๐Ÿง  oxytocin - known as the love hormone that makes us feel warm and fuzzy
๐Ÿง  dopamine - the feel-good hormone that controls your mood
๐Ÿง  endorphins - the body's natural pain relievers
๐Ÿง  serotonin - the mood regulator that helps you feel emotionally stable and calm

Next time you're reaching for your vice, try one of these hacks to feel the rush instead. ๐Ÿฅฐ

Sometimes it can be difficult to tell how someone is actually feeling, from the outside in.

Subtle changes in someone's behaviour could be a sign that they may not be feeling their best. They could also appear happy but are fighting a battle within.

A conversation can make a huge difference if you notice a change in their behaviour.

Stress is a normal and common response to challenging or new situations.

But, when stress is experienced for prolonged periods of time, it can impact your mental and physical health. ๐Ÿ˜Ÿ

If you are regularly stressed, there are relaxation techniques you can try for relief:
๐Ÿค Breathing exercises: breathe in for 5 counts, hold for 5, release for 5. Repeat this for 3-5 minutes.
๐Ÿค Progressive muscle relaxation: working your way from your head to toes, tense your muscles tightly for a few seconds, and then relax.
๐Ÿค Yoga and tai chi can improve breathing and relaxation.

Although these techniques won't remove the cause of stress , you may feel better equipped to deal with it.
