Streaky Bay Area School Striving for excellence in all aspects of education in a collaborative manner

Department for Education South Australia

The Streaky Bay Area School is situated on the pristine coastline of Western Eyre Peninsula. The community's main industries include agriculture, fishing/aquaculture, tourism/hospitality and other service industries. The school's values are care, respect, security, success and trust. Values education is a focus, providing themes which are incorporated into the R - 12 Pastoral Care program. Over th

e past ten years, the school has been involved in further developing teachers' pedagogical approaches through involvement in projects such as: Thinking skills, Learning to Learn, Success for Boys and the ICT Research Project - 21st Century Learning for Contemporary Classrooms. Currently the school is a John Fleming Lighthouse School and has introduced warm-ups and Explicit Teaching approaches into classrooms. Spanish is the second language that is taught from Reception to Year 8. Streaky Bay Area School has a stormwater recycling wetland and small vineyard, providing students with learning opportunities in horticulture and water conservation/science. The school prides itself on supporting students with their chosen pathways in senior secondary school. We recently had a $1.5 million upgrade of the Home Economics and Technical Studies areas into Trade Training Centres that offer Certificate II competencies in Food and Hospitality, and Building and Construction. We offer a range of subjects including university pathways, Vocational Education and Training options, school-based apprenticeships and traineeships, and distance education subjects.

The year 11 Outdoor Ed class successfully completed their first camp of the year, bushwalking through the Gawler Ranges, self reliant for nearly 30km’s.

On the last day, the students created a touching memorial for their class mate Zahli at Scrubby Peak, who chose the camp location and camp site back in Term 1.

Overall it was a great experience for the year 11 students with memories they will carry for the rest of their schooling and beyond!

Thanks to Mr Luzi and Tam for supporting the students on this camp.

Today our Year 12 students celebrated their Halfway Day, marking the halfway point of their final year of schooling.

This special milestone is an opportunity to reflect on how far they have come, the challenges they have overcome, and the memories they have created together.

We are incredibly proud of their dedication, resilience, and achievements so far, and we look forward to supporting them through the remainder of their Year 12 journey.

Congratulations to our Class of 2026 on reaching this significant milestone!

Draft Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP)

We are proud to share our Draft Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) with you. This summary document reflects our commitment to building respectful relationships, deepening our understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, and embedding these perspectives into our everyday practice with children.

Your voice is an important part of this journey. As you read through the Draft RAP summary, we invite you to share your thoughts — this can be as simple as one or two words that capture how it makes you feel, what stands out to you, or what you hope to see moving forward.

You can provide feedback by:

• emailing [email protected] so feedback can be shared with our working group.

We would love to receive feedback by Week 3, Term 3, as this will align with our first meeting for the term and allow time to collate responses.

Thank you for being part of this important journey with us.

🌏🔬Year 4/5 Science Investigation: Weathering and Erosion🔬🌏

Our Year 4/5 students have been exploring the fascinating processes of weathering and erosion, learning about how these natural forces continually shape and change the Earth's surface over time.

Yesterday, the class worked with Mrs Launer to conduct a hands-on science investigation focused on water erosion. Students examined how soil can be washed away by moving water and investigated the impact this can have on the environment. Through careful observation, prediction and testing, they compared different methods to determine which strategies were most effective at reducing the rate of erosion and protecting the soil.

The investigation provided students with a valuable opportunity to apply their scientific inquiry skills, work collaboratively and develop a deeper understanding of the importance of land management and environmental conservation. It was wonderful to see students actively engaged in asking questions, collecting evidence and drawing conclusions from their results.

We look forward to continuing our learning about weathering, erosion and the many ways we can help care for our environment. 🌱💧🌎

Our Year 8 and 9 PE students took their learning beyond the classroom with a visit to On The Fit Side, exploring biomechanical principles and how they can be used to improve performance in sport.

Students challenged themselves, stepped outside their comfort zones and applied their learning in a real gym environment.

A huge thank you to Kim Lawrence and Stevi Day for sharing their space, time, effort and expertise with our students.

2026 Stronger Connections Convention

Michelle Kelsh and Toni Foster attended the 2026 Stronger Connections Convention, which brought together educators and wellbeing professionals from across South Australia to explore ways to strengthen student wellbeing, mental health, and school connectedness.

Day 1 – Promoting Student Mental Health & Wellbeing
The first day focused on promoting student mental health and wellbeing, with a keynote presentation from Kristen Douglas, Head of Schools & Communities at Headspace. Kristen shared valuable insights into supporting positive mental health outcomes for young people and highlighted the importance of creating school environments where students feel connected, supported, and empowered to seek help when needed.

Breakout sessions included:
• Ask, Don't Tell • Stronger Together
• From Vision to Practice: Embedding Wellbeing

Day 2 – Fostering Safe & Connected Learning Communities
The second day centred on fostering safe and connected learning communities, with keynote speaker Justin Roberts, ReLATE National Program Director at the MacKillop Institute. Justin shared practical approaches to building strong relationships within school communities and creating environments where students feel safe, valued, and ready to learn.

Sessions included:
• Enhancing Educator Wellbeing Through Student-Centred Practices
• Designed for Context
• Billabongs of Knowledge: Cultural Safety in Trauma-Informed Practice – A First Nations Perspective

The convention provided valuable opportunities to connect with other wellbeing leaders, share experiences, and learn from schools implementing innovative wellbeing practices. Michelle and Toni came away with ideas and practical strategies to explore at Streaky Bay Area School, including strengthening student leadership opportunities, further embedding a whole-school approach to wellbeing, and continuing to build a connected and supportive school culture.

Overall, the convention was an inspiring and worthwhile professional learning experience that reinforced the importance of relationships, connection, belonging, and cultural safety in supporting positive outcomes for both students and staff.
