A good and decent outcome.
I welcome the Commonwealth Government’s decision to reverse the removal of travel support for Doug and Kaye Baird, the parents of Corporal Cameron Baird VC MG.
Corporal Baird is one of Australia’s most highly decorated soldiers. He served in East Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan, and was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for Australia after being killed in action in June 2013.
He was also one of our own — growing up in Gladstone Park, attending local schools, and remaining deeply connected to the Hume community.
For more than a decade, Doug and Kaye have carried Cameron’s story across the country — speaking at schools, RSLs, commemorative events and community forums, helping Australians understand not only their son’s courage, but the service and sacrifice of all those who wear our nation’s uniform.
That work matters.
At this week’s Council meeting, Hume City Council made our position clear. I was proud to support a Notice of Motion moved by Cr Naim Kurt, seconded by Cr Steve Gagen, calling on the Commonwealth Government to reverse this decision and continue supporting the Baird family in their important commemorative and veteran advocacy work. That motion was carried — and I’m pleased to see that advocacy has now been heard.
I also want to acknowledge the strong community advocacy that helped achieve this logical and positive outcome, including our local Sunbury Victoria Sub-Branch RSL, MPs, veterans’ groups and community members who spoke up with respect and conviction.
As Mayor last year, it was a great pleasure to welcome Cameron’s father, Doug, to Hume for the 2025 Corporal Cameron Baird VC MG Memorial Awards — an occasion made possible, in part, because of this travel support.
Those awards are one of the ways Hume continues to honour Cameron’s legacy, supporting young people aged 12 to 25 to lead, grow and achieve their dreams.
I’m pleased the Commonwealth Government has listened.
Cameron’s story deserves to be told.
And Doug and Kaye deserve our support as they continue to tell it.
