Students Explore Future Careers at the Tech and Trade Fit Expo
A group of Year 9 Students recently attended the Tech and Trade Fit Expo, an exciting event designed to showcase career opportunities in trades, transport, logistics, technology and other industries. The expo aims to encourage women to consider careers in trades and other traditionally male-dominated industries, while also providing all students with opportunities to explore a wide range of career pathways.
Throughout the day, students participated in hands-on activities and experiences that they may not otherwise have the opportunity to try. Activities included locksmithing, metal casting, boat building, firefighting demonstrations, bricklaying, carpentry, plumbing and electrical work. Students also had the chance to drive trucks and tractors in simulators, code robots, create animations and learn about careers with companies such as Bunnings, Linfox, Woolworths, Amazon and Dulux, just to name a few.
Here is what some of our students had to say about their experience:
Eiman – "I liked seeing all the people in the stalls who were very passionate about what they do and all the interactive things that they do."
A– "I enjoyed the variety of opportunities we were exposed to and it gave me a lot of ideas for my future."
Izla – "I learnt that they cut off the tails and testicles of sheep that get butchered. Also, a lot of paths have opened for me knowing what careers there are."
Carmen – "I found the expo very interesting and fascinating, seeing all the jobs and workforce related with trade and transit. It was a very enjoyable experience and it opened up many possible job ideas for me."
Georgia – "I learnt how to make a plumbing system and my favourite part of the day was learning to drive a tractor."
Emmersion – "I drove a tractor and I did some welding. I also learnt how to make a plumbing system."
Caitlin – "I got a whole bunch of free stuff. Learnt about companies and what happens behind the scenes."
Shelby – "I learnt more about different kinds of trades and apprenticeships."
Isabel – "I got to experience different occupations and find out what things I'm passionate about, plus all the freebies."
Jovina – "I learnt many things about different careers and did fun stuff."
Mia – "I learnt many new things within plumbing. I got to fit in a sink and they taught me how to use tools, and we did some good simulators. I loved learning about framing/carpentry and winning myself a pink hard hat and talking to women in trade."
Olivia – "I got to experience different trades and find out my possible skills and career passions. I got lots of freebies."
April – "I learnt about potential trade paths to pursue during and after school. I enjoyed meeting people from a wide variety of work fields."
Emily – "I really liked the opportunity that I got to go on this excursion and I learnt so many things I didn’t know. Some tradies were different to what I thought they were going to be, and it was really fun. I hope I get to do something like this again."
The Tech and Trade Fit Expo provided students with valuable opportunities to explore future careers, develop new skills and gain insight into industries they may not have previously considered. It was an inspiring day that opened students' eyes to the many pathways available to them after school.
