BREAKING: The Greens are on track for a record high Senate vote in Queensland - meaning I will be re‑elected! Thank you all so much for your support and for backing our hopeful, helpful policies.
But it’s bittersweet news for us in Qld because despite our vote holding in the lower house, the absolute collapse of the Liberal vote and complex preference interactions means that we have lost our wonderful members for Brisbane and Griffith, my dear friends and , from parliament.
Stephen and Max have been champions for their community for three years. The free dinners, back-to-school packs, flood clean-ups and cyclone prep, getting people into housing, helping with NDIS - they have made a material difference in so many people’s lives. And they have reshaped the national agenda, putting housing and renters front and centre, and taking on the power of the big corporations so used to running our democracy. They’re wonderful young men and I know they have more to give to the world, but we will miss them dearly in our party room.
In welcome news, while counting is still progressing, we are on track to keep the amazing in Ryan. She is an absolute joy and such a fighter for climate action, cost of living relief and integrity in politics. Elsewhere around the country it looks good for us in the seat of Wills with , Melbourne with dear , and it’s still close in Richmond with absolute legend .4.richmond.
And with a record high national Senate vote, we will be in sole balance of power, meaning Labor can choose to work with the Liberals or the Greens to pass their legislation. We stand ready to work with Labor and push them to go further to help people and protect the planet.
Already Greens pressure has seen Labor adopt versions of our policies, with them committing to wiping 20% of student debt (we’ll push for wiping it all!), act on supermarket price gouging (we’ll also push for more competition in the grocery sector!), and 90% of GP visits for free (we’ll push for 100%, and adding dental and mental into Medicare!).
