The Culture and Capability Officer/Indigenous Culture Support is responsible the South West Region.

Surat Aboriginal Corporation promotes Culture & Capability, Safety & Wellbeing and Children & Schooling programs for Indigenous communities primarily in the Maranoa Region. The primary focus is to support and build the capacity and leadership of individual, communities and organisations as well as maintaining, protecting and promoting Indigenous culture and supporting healing. This includes:
•Runn

ing projects that promote and protect the Indigenous culture as well as promoting culture exchange and share knowledge.
•Provide workshop style learning and development opportunities for Indigenous adults in the Maranoa and Balonne Regions including (but not limited to): •Develop women’s leadership and governance capacity;
•Workshops on project management, funding management and other valuable and essential skills to enhance, update and develop individual and organisational skills and capacity. The Safety and Well-Being Officer’s primary focus is to improve the health, social and emotional wellbeing of Indigenous people, especially teenagers and young adults, to enjoy similar levels of physical, emotional and social wellbeing enjoyed by other Australians. This includes:
•Working with local Indigenous organisations and other service providers to facilitate and deliver workshops and events to address and raise awareness of a range of issues, including (but not limited to): •Drug and alcohol awareness
•Mental health
•Social and emotional well being
•Community safety and family violence
•Depression and suicide ideation

•Delivering and supporting a broad range of sport and recreation activities in the Maranoa Region schools and communities, including (but not limited to): •Traditional games
•Coaching courses
•Exercise programs

•Provide links and referrals to mainstream services as well as Indigenous Services.
•Work with other services within the South West Region. The Children and Schooling Officer is responsible for providing Indigenous children of the Maranoa region a good start in life through improved early childhood development and learning, improved literacy and numeracy, school readiness, school attendance and school retention. The communities that will be services are primarily Roma, Surat, Mitchell and Wallumbilla. Each of these communities will have access to workshop such as:
•The Mums and Bubs reading project
•The Healthy Lunch Program
•The After School Homework Project

The Project Officer is primarily responsible for assisting with bookkeeping, accounts management and reports management as well as providing administration support. The Project Officer is also responsible to co-ordinate projects that Surat Aboriginal Corporation takes on from time to time. Please note that all Officers assist in:
•Providing links and referrals to mainstream services as well as Indigenous Services.
•Work with other services within the service areas. We look forward to working with all the local services, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous, in the near future to better enhance the knowledge and capability of the Indigenous people.

FREE Trauma training in Surat!

LifeFlight Australia and the LifeFlight Australia Training Academy, are proud to present the LifeFlight First Minutes Matter FREE trauma training workshops program.

This program delivers free community trauma training in remote locations that can experience longer than normal wait times for emergency response, in the event of a medical incident. The First Minutes Matter workshops are delivered over a 6 hour period and offer training in life saving techniques and skills and teach people how to best respond in a medical emergency.

The program is taught face to face by one our critical care medical staff, who have worked in the pre-hospital setting for many years.

A workshop is being held locally at Surat Shire Hall Supper Room, 20 Cordelia Street, Surat on Thursday 14 September 2023. To book, please go to firstminutesmatter.org.au.
This workshop is funded by the Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal Grant.

Department of Transport and Main Roads will be hosting Roma's next Black Coffee Indigenous Business Network event.

Black Coffee is a grassroots Indigenous business networking gathering held in regions around Australia each month. Originating in Queensland but now across Australia, the goal of the Black Coffee movement is to provide a platform to connect micro and small business owners around Australia. Indigenous business owners and professionals, along with their supporters, get together and yarn with the aim to build relationships and grow networks.

Our Story

Established in 2000, the Surat Aboriginal Corporation (SAC) promotes and facilitates health and community services to multiple towns across South West Queensland. In delivering various programs for Indigenous communities SAC specialises in the areas of Culture & Capability / Indigenous Culture Support, Safety & Wellbeing and Children & Schooling.

In ensuring children are well cared for, the Children & Schooling Officer's role is to encourage and provide support to families
