Three days, four sports and plenty of unforgettable memories: Armidale Sports Trip

Our students travelled to Armidale for a fantastic weekend of interschool sport, taking part in tennis, volleyball, netball and basketball alongside students from Sydney Boys High School during their annual excursion to The Armidale School in the NSW Northern Tablelands.
Beyond the competition, the trip gave students the chance to meet new people, strengthen friendships and enjoy time together.

What stood out most was the atmosphere across the entire weekend. Students cheered each other on with enthusiasm, competed respectfully and made the most of every opportunity both on and off the court.

Was and Will Be. A powerful night of theatre

This Sydney Girls High School and Sydney Boys High School co-production delivered an extraordinary performance featuring scenes written by Indigenous authors for non-Indigenous actors.

As playwright Jane Harrison describes, these works invite performers and audiences alike to “walk in our shoes for a moment in time and embody these narratives.”

The scenes highlighted what connects us as humans, as well as what we can learn from First Nations People. They spoke to modern and ancient culture and the space in between and what has been lost.
Every element worked together to create a performance that was moving, engaging, and deeply memorable.

UNSW Maths Club at SGHS

The UNSW Maths Club, which began in Week 2 of Term 2, has quickly become a vibrant and welcoming space for Years 7–10 students to dive into challenging and engaging mathematics.

Students explore concepts beyond the classroom curriculum, building strong problem-solving, reasoning, and collaboration skills along the way.

With support from UNSW student mentors, our students are encouraged to tackle complex problems with curiosity, working together step by step in a highly collaborative environment. Around 30 students regularly take part, using whiteboards to share thinking, test ideas, learn from one another and built their confidence.

Year 7 at the Art Gallery of NSW

Year 7 Visual Arts students spent the day exploring the Art Gallery of New South Wales, experiencing some of Australia’s most celebrated art prizes and exhibitions.
They began with the Young Archies and then moved through the Archibald Prize, where they saw an incredible range of portraits, realistic, abstract, bold, subtle, each telling its own story. A standout moment was the life-sized Iluwanti Ken by Richard Lewer, which made a strong impression on many students.

The visit continued through the Wynne Prize and Sulman Prize, with students engaging with striking landscapes, sculptures, and imaginative works that sparked plenty of discussion.

At The Tank, Mike Hewson’s The Key’s Under the Mat offered a completely different experience. An immersive space where students could move through, explore, and physically engage with the artwork.

An inspiring conversation on creativity, risk and redefining success with Jenevieve Chang

We were beyond thrilled to welcomed back Jenevieve Chang (Year of 2004) to speak with students about her journey.
Jenevieve currently serves as Discipline Lead for Screenwriting at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS).
Her career journey has taken her from SGHS to theatre stages and performances in London and China.

After school, Jenevieve received an offer to study Law and Arts, but instead chose to pursue Communications and Media, following a growing passion for theatre studies and performance. And she went on to spend time in London, where she thrived in a vibrant, cutting-edge performance and dance scene. That decision led her down a creative path shaped by courage, adaptability and the willingness to embrace unexpected opportunities.

The global financial crisis became a turning point in Jenevieve’s journey. While much of the Western world faced economic uncertainty, she recognised new opportunities emerging in China and made the bold decision to relocate there. During this time, she produced and performed in a burlesque show. An experience that later became a significant part of her memoir, The Good Girl of Chinatown, which explores ambition, identity and the pressure of expectations, while reflecting on her own journey of redefining success.

Jenevieve has been featured on the ABC and interviewed by Richard Fidler as part of the acclaimed Conversations series. A testament to the impact and authenticity of her story.

Students were fascinated by Jenevieve’s honesty about uncertainty, changing direction and building a career around passion and creativity rather than a fixed plan.
Her visit was a powerful reminder that success can take many forms, and that some of the most meaningful opportunities come from being open to the unexpected.

Thank you Jenevieve for sharing such an honest and inspiring reflection on creativity, courage and forging your own path.

If you are a Sydney Girls High School graduate, we would love to stay connected. We are continually updating our Alumnae Database to strengthen our community and celebrate our graduates' achievements. Please take a moment to complete the SGHS Alumnae Form:

Behind the scenes: The SGHS Media Team

Our Media Team is one of the many creative cocurricular opportunities at Sydney Girls High School. Made up of three teams, Film Crew, Photography and Writers, this group of students works behind the scenes to capture the energy, achievements and everyday moments that make our school community special.

Our Film Crew produces videos of major events and keeps the school connected through live coverage and creative productions. The Photography Team captures everything from sport and drama performances to guest speakers and every day school life.
This year, the Writers Team is continuing to grow, giving students the opportunity to become student journalists, researching stories, writing articles, interviewing alumni and developing their voice as storytellers.

The Media Team gives students the chance to build real-world creative and technical skills while sharing and preserving the stories and memories of school life for years to come.

SGHS 2026 Athletics Carnival

Student involvement in this year’s athletics carnival was outstanding, even with rain on the horizon.
Despite the grey skies and wet conditions, the mood stayed upbeat from start to finish. Students arrived in house colours and supported each other throughout the day. The events were competitive, but the atmosphere in the stands was just as strong, with constant cheering and encouragement across every race, jump and throw.
It felt like a day of shared energy, where everyone played a part in making the carnival as special as it was.
