Today is Mabo Day.

On 3 June, we honour the legacy of Eddie Koiki Mabo and the Meriam people whose strength and determination led to the landmark 1992 High Court decision.

The Mabo decision rejected terra nullius, the false idea that Australia belonged to no one before colonisation, and recognised the traditional land rights of the Meriam people. It paved the way for native title in Australia.

Mabo Day marks the final day of National Reconciliation Week, but reconciliation is a commitment we must carry forward every day. We all have a role to play in listening, learning and taking meaningful action towards recognition, respect and justice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Today, our students and staff came together for our Reconciliation Walk around the oval as part of National Reconciliation Week.

It was wonderful to see our school community walking together in the spirit of respect, connection and reconciliation.

A big thank you to our Maali Bakers students for the delicious cinnamon myrtle cookies and refreshing lemon myrtle iced tea enjoyed after the walk.

Couple weeks ago, our Year 11 Outdoor Education students put their skills into practice during an overnight expedition along the Munda Biddi Trail in Dwellingup. Students navigated their way along the trail to reach camp safely, demonstrating Diligent planning and Accountable decision-making throughout the journey. Once at camp, tents were set up, dinner was prepared, and the evening was spent enjoying shared activities around the campfire.

Last week, Year 9 Outdoor Recreation students travelled to Walyunga National Park to complete the Echidna Trail. Students hiked 11km and climbed over 400m in elevation, showing resilience and Respect for the natural environment. Along the way, they observed a range of wildlife, including kangaroos and wild goats, making for an Extraordinary learning experience in the outdoors.

Ella Detloff and Hamish Cavallaro, our first-year ABCN Accelerate Scholars, recently took part in their Big Day Out couple weeks ago.

This valuable experience provided an opportunity to connect with industry mentors, explore future pathways and strengthen their understanding of career and study options. It is a key part of the Australian Business and Community Network Accelerate program, supporting students to build confidence, networks and aspirations for the future.

Yesterday’s Maali Bakers Elders Afternoon Tea was a wonderful celebration of culture, community and hospitality.

Our Follow the Dream Maali Bakers curated a beautiful spread of sweet and savoury treats, showcasing the incredible recipes they have been developing throughout the year. Guests enjoyed lemon myrtle iced tea, lemon scones with lillypilly jam, wattleseed chocolate mousse, finger lime shortbread, native orange sausage rolls with bush tomato chutney, tamarind tofu bites and cinnamon myrtle bites and more.

The afternoon highlighted the students’ care and pride in their learning as they prepared, presented and hosted for our Elders. It was a special opportunity to share food, stories and connection in a warm and welcoming space.

Thank you to our Elders and family members for joining us and to all staff and students involved for making the event such a success.

Anfd thank you to our Chef Ms Walkden!

Our Maali Bakers have been hard at work this week, perfecting their scone recipe in preparation for the upcoming Elders Afternoon Tea on Wednesday 20 May.

After baking multiple batches using two completely different recipes, students explored the unique flavours of native lemon myrtle—sourced in two different ways—to see how it influenced taste and texture.

The team then took on the important task of taste testing, carefully comparing each batch and experimenting with a variety of jams and creams to find the perfect combination.

Which recipe came out on top? Those attending the afternoon tea will be the first to find out!

It has been busy in the Student Services Courtyard today as students came together to support and help spread kindness across our school community. 💙

To recognise Do It For Dolly Day, students enjoyed pancakes cooked by Jon Jon, our Chaplain, while taking part in activities focused on connection, inclusion and positive wellbeing. Kindness messages filled the courtyard as students shared encouraging words with one another, alongside plenty of bubbles and smiles throughout the day.

Thank you to everyone who got involved and helped create such a positive atmosphere by showing kindness, respect and care for others. Together, we can all make a difference.
