WE’RE HIRING!

And we’re pretty excited about this one.

The Sydney Library of Things is looking for a Volunteer Engagement Coordinator to help support the 100+ wonderful volunteers who keep our libraries, Toy Library and Repair Hubs humming.

It’s a flexible, paid role for around 10 hours a week, perfect for someone who’s organised, great with people and wants their work to contribute to something genuinely useful.

If you believe in community, sustainability and a future where we share more and consume less, we’d love to hear from you.

10 hrs/week · Flexible/mostly remote · $38.65/hr + super

Who else finds it hard to get by without plastic bin bags? There are some great suggestions in this post - have you got any others to share?

Day 17: Avoiding plastic bin liners

Plastic trash, rubbish, waste, or bin bags – whatever you call them, they’re not the only option.

Many people are switching to alternatives for their households, schools, and offices, including:

🗑️Reusing other bags you already have - bread bags, packaging, or other wrapping - before they head to landfill anyway
🗑️Lining the bin with newspaper, flyers, or scrap paper
🗑️Going ‘naked’ - i.e. using the bin without a liner, and cleaning it out when needed

Some ideas for avoiding odours include:

🗑️Wrapping messy items in newspaper or scrap paper before throwing it out
🗑️Freezing wet scraps in paper or reusable containers, and taking them out on bin day
🗑️Looking into home composting systems to get rid of food scraps

💚 Plastic Free July Starts with Borrowing, Not Buying! 💚🌏
Many household items are only used a handful of times before ending up forgotten in a cupboard - or worse, in landfill. By borrowing from the Sydney Library of Things, you're helping to cut down on unnecessary consumption, reduce plastic packaging waste, and give great items a longer life. Borrow items like:
🔧 Tools for DIY projects�🎉 Party and event equipment�🍳 Kitchen appliances�🌱 Gardening equipment�…and so much more!
Every item borrowed is one less item manufactured, packaged, transported, and eventually discarded.
Together, small changes can make a big difference. This July, join the movement and discover how easy it is to save money, reduce clutter, and help create a more circular, sustainable community.

This beautiful chair was discarded for kerbside pick-up, destined for landfill. Instead, it was rescued and brought to the Fix-It Hub! After some care from Robert, our volunteer repairer… it’s fixed and looking brand new!!

Did you know that one of the Sydney Library of Things also runs The Lane Cove Toy Library?

Last week was a huge week for the Lane Cove Toy Library.
On Wednesday, 17 June 2026, The Toy Library was awarded the Lane Cove Council Sustainable Organisation Award 🎉. This award is recognition of everything the volunteers do to keep toys, puzzles and games circulating through the community rather than landfill.
Then on Friday 19 June, The Lane Cove Toy Library hosted the Toy Libraries Australia NSW Training Day, welcoming toy librarians from across Sydney and Wollongong. What a great reminder of how much goodwill exists in this sector!

It was so easy to organise the training day as all the items that were needed were from The Sydney Library of Things:

Fast fashion is out. Fixing what we already own is in. ✂️♻️
The Cromer Fixery is on today, helping reduce textile waste by repairing your clothing for free so you can keep wearing what you love. So before you toss it, fix it! Your clothes deserve a second chance. Book in for the next session at The Fixery on the first Saturday of each month, link in comments 👇

“Wearable mid-century to present-day articles of clothing make up the stock of excess clothing. However, the bulk of it came in the last three decades with the explosion of mass produced fast fashion and, more recently, ultra-fast fashion” writes Nina Gbor, Director of the Circular Economy & Waste Program at the Australia Institute.

‘Globally, the acceleration of fast fashion has contributed to more than 100 billion garments being manufactured annually. In 2024, research from The Australia Institute revealed that Australia was the world’s largest per capita consumer of textile waste.’

‘Some might say excess is just the nature of capitalism. The cost to the environment, however, is so colossal that the fashion industry is often called one of the planet’s biggest polluters.’
