We have some amazing news today!
After a long absence, two Black Swans have returned to Kippax Lake!
As you may recall, there was a tragic incident about 18 months ago where the male Black Swan was viciously attacked by a dog that had entered Kippax Lake. Despite the best efforts of WIRES and vets, the male Black Swan was too seriously injured and had to be put down. This was a tragic reminder of the importance of responsible dog ownership, and the need for all dog owners to take heed of the signs prohibiting off-lead dogs near the surrounds of Kippax Lake.
It was a sad sight of the female Black Swan caring for her cygnets by herself after her mate’s death. It was a sadder sight still, when her babies grew up and flew away, swimming all alone around Kippax Lake. The loneliness and heartbreak may have been too much for the female Black Swan as eventually she disappeared.
It is not clear whether one of the Black Swans today is her, or indeed whether it is a breeding pair. What we did notice was one of them investigating the breeding island in the middle of Kippax Lake, sadly overgrown through lack of use.
Kippax Lake is a beautiful natural environment that is home to a diverse range of wildlife, and it's up to all of us to help preserve and protect it. We want to remind everyone in our community to please be mindful of the impact their actions can have on the environment and the animals that call it home.
Responsible dog ownership is a crucial part of this, and we urge all dog owners to follow the signs in place around Kippax Lake to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all animals who live in and around it.
It is not credible for a dog owner to allow their dog be off-lead near Kippax Lake and profess ignorance of what the signs say. The signs may not be many, but their message is clear and unequivocal.
Apologies for the poor-quality photos and video – it was enough that we were able to capture something, given our excitement at the return of the Black Swans.
