Saving Moore Park Moore Park is under threat

We must ensure it is preserved for generations to come and not destroyed by construction

Appreciate - Protect - Support

Moore Park was set aside 150 years ago as a green space for public recreation. It belongs to all of us, not a privileged few. Over the years, sections have been sliced off, substantially reducing its size. Today, it is under threat again. If you appreciate the value of the Park to the community and wish to protect it, we ask you to register your support on our website www.savingmoorepark.com.au

aving Moore Park Inc. is an incorporated association established by a group of residents living close to Moore Park, who enjoy the amenity it offers and have done so for many years, and want to ensure it is preserved for generations to come. While we talk to everyone who can help us, we are an independent community group, unaffiliated with any political or activist group or individuals. We have established this website to increase the community’s understanding of the value of Moore Park and how it is at risk.

We have some amazing news today!

After a long absence, two Black Swans have returned to Kippax Lake!

As you may recall, there was a tragic incident about 18 months ago where the male Black Swan was viciously attacked by a dog that had entered Kippax Lake. Despite the best efforts of WIRES and vets, the male Black Swan was too seriously injured and had to be put down. This was a tragic reminder of the importance of responsible dog ownership, and the need for all dog owners to take heed of the signs prohibiting off-lead dogs near the surrounds of Kippax Lake.

It was a sad sight of the female Black Swan caring for her cygnets by herself after her mate’s death. It was a sadder sight still, when her babies grew up and flew away, swimming all alone around Kippax Lake. The loneliness and heartbreak may have been too much for the female Black Swan as eventually she disappeared.

It is not clear whether one of the Black Swans today is her, or indeed whether it is a breeding pair. What we did notice was one of them investigating the breeding island in the middle of Kippax Lake, sadly overgrown through lack of use.

Kippax Lake is a beautiful natural environment that is home to a diverse range of wildlife, and it's up to all of us to help preserve and protect it. We want to remind everyone in our community to please be mindful of the impact their actions can have on the environment and the animals that call it home.

Responsible dog ownership is a crucial part of this, and we urge all dog owners to follow the signs in place around Kippax Lake to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all animals who live in and around it.

It is not credible for a dog owner to allow their dog be off-lead near Kippax Lake and profess ignorance of what the signs say. The signs may not be many, but their message is clear and unequivocal.

Apologies for the poor-quality photos and video – it was enough that we were able to capture something, given our excitement at the return of the Black Swans.

We've been advised over this coming weekend there will be no parking on Moore Park due to the state of the grass surface.

We don't yet know what will happen after this weekend.

We are very glad that common sense has prevailed - at least for now.

That this common sense did not exist at the time to prevent the extensive damage to the grass surface of everyone's Moore Park, is very disappointing.

It is difficult to reconcile that the very body charged with the maintenance and improvement of Moore Park to a world-class standard for the public allowed this to happen, but rest assured, we notice, we care, and we act.

You don’t need a PhD in pure mathematics to understand this equation:

wet weather + high vehicle movement + grass surface = predictable, incredible destruction of everyone’s parkland

Who thinks this is ok to continue to allow parking on our precious Moore Park in such conditions, and for such damage to occur?

The argument that parking on Moore Park is ok simply because legislation allows it demonstrates a lack of empathy for everyone’s parkland and a disregard for actual conditions.

Further, it is not simply enough to say that the grass surface will be rehabilitated after events – events are ongoing at the precinct, and not just sporting events. Damage will therefore continue to occur.

And where are the funds for any rehabilitation going to come from? These funds could be spent on so many other positive contributions - landscaping, seating, BBQ facilities and public art.

In any case, it is the citizens of NSW who have to put up and live with the ongoing damage to their wonderful Moore Park.

It is ironic that Premier Perottet recently declared the new $900m Allianz Stadium https://www.smh.com.au/sport/soccer/roosters-rabbitohs-to-open-the-new-sfs-as-matildas-secure-canada-match-20220609-p5ash4.html to be “a world-class stadium for our world-class people”: https://www.smh.com.au/politics/nsw/grand-opening-of-the-stadium-that-almost-lost-government-an-election-20220828-p5bdcj.html.

Please let us know what about the treatment of the grass surface at Moore Park is “world class”?

How about demonstrating some common sense and not allow parking when the surface is so obviously wet and / or damaged? Or if such discretion is not possible, then not allow parking at all.
