Acacia didn’t know, it’s National Wattle Day! 🤭

Today is a day to recognise and celebrate these iconic Aussie plants. Acacias play a very important role in the environment and are a valuable resource for wildlife and people. Some wonderful examples found in Greater Sydney include:
🏵️ Sydney golden wattle (Acacia longifolia): often found along coastal regions, flowering indicates the season to fish for sea mullet for Gadigal people.
🏵️ Hickory wattle (Acacia implexa): known for its light green willowy foliage, it is used by Traditional Owners for fishing as the leaves are toxic and stun fish.
🏵️ Black wattle (Acacia decurrens): a fast-growing windbreak or shelter tree, used by Dharawal people as an indicator of when Country needed to be burned.
🏵️ Sydney green wattle (Acacia parramattensis): commonly used in bush regeneration projects, gum is used by Traditional Owners to waterproof containers and canoes.

In Greater Sydney, many of our on-ground NRM projects benefit these acacias, through actions such as w**d removal, pest animal control and cultural burns.

This work is partially funded by the Australian Government Natural Heritage Trust and delivered by Greater Sydney Local Land Services, a member of the Commonwealth Regional Delivery Partners panel.

Got a problem with Indian mynas?🙋

Indian mynas are an aggressive, highly invasive bird species that can cause significant agricultural and environmental damage, including predation of native bird species.

For landholders, Indian mynas cause issues by eating stock feed, grain, pellets and compost, as well as contaminating feed bins and leave an unsightly mess in sheds, stables and anywhere they nest or roost.

With the Indian myna breeding season running from August to March, and populations usually at their highest when the young leave the nest between December and March, we are encouraging landholders to plan and take action now.

Options to reduce their impacts including reducing the availability of their feed sources, undertaking a trapping program and reporting populations via FeralScan.

For more information on the Indian myna, including how to distinguish it from native birds and your management options, read the Indian myna control handbook that is supported by Local Land Services 🔗 https://bit.ly/4qT3EMk

Plants poisonous to livestock – know what to look out for 🕵️

As conditions continue to be variable across NSW, there could be an increased risk for livestock to toxic plants.

Pastures are more likely to contain potentially toxic plants during drought and following periods of high rainfall, so we are reminding producers to keep an eye on what plants they are seeing and are emerging in their paddocks.

Examples of plants potentially toxic to livestock include:
✅ Pimelea
✅ Flatw**d
✅ St John's Wort
✅ Common and blue heliotrope
✅ Paterson's curse

For more information about these and other plants, check out our dedicated webpage today 🔗 https://bit.ly/4r3uuRv

H5 bird flu has now been detected in 4 birds across 3 locations in NSW.

Detections have been confirmed at:
📍 Hawks Nest
📍 Wentworth
📍 Narooma

Public reporting remains a critical part of the response and supports ongoing surveillance, monitoring and early detection efforts.

If you find sick or dead wild birds, domestic birds, marine mammals or other wildlife showing signs of H5 bird flu:

🚫 AVOID contact with the animals and their environment.

📝 RECORD what you see, including the location, species and number of animals affected

📞 REPORT it by using the online form https://forms.bfs.dpi.nsw.gov.au/forms/23970 or call the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.

🔬 We will assess each report and determine whether testing and sampling are required based on the location and species involved.

Not all reports will lead to an investigation, collection or testing. Where further action is required, we may contact you for more information or arrange collection and testing.

📢 Ongoing surveillance continues across the state.
