🎉𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝗮 𝘄𝗿𝗮𝗽 𝗼𝗻 National Skills Week! This year's theme has been "life-changing" - and we're closing out with two stories that show just how many different starting points can lead to a life-changing career.

Connar Vitnell came to building surveying via a Bachelor of Arts, home building sales and a warehouse floor, before council sponsored his Advanced Diploma of Building Surveying at Goulburn Mulwaree Council.

Lara Rofe once dreamed of hosting Coachella. Her path took her through event management and town planning before she found her footing as a Cadet Building Surveyor at Orange City Council, with her degree funded along the way.

Different starting points, same result: a hands-on career with real variety, backed by councils investing in the people who choose it.

Liam Wood started with a month of work experience at Mildura Rural City Council. Today he's a Design Engineering Officer, designing the roads, footpaths and drainage that keep the community moving.

This year's theme is life-changing, and it captures something real about local government.

A 𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝘁𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽, 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹 can set the direction of a whole career. And the people who come up through these pathways go on to shape the places we live, the roads, parks, services and programmes that communities rely on every day.

Local Government Week is here 🎉 Running Monday 3 - Sunday 9 August, this initiative celebrates the work councils do in communities across the state, from the everyday services we rely on to the people delivering them.

Did you know there are more than 400 professions in local government? Town planners, environmental scientists, librarians, engineers, lifeguards, arborists, community development officers - the variety is huge, and most people only see a fraction of it.
