It's been an extremely busy and sad day in Fire and Rescue NSW Communications Centres today.
It can be frustrating answering the Triple Zero (000) calls requesting urgent assistance and being limited in the resources we can respond. We support the responders and give them every resource requested. We are a radio message or phone call away.
Our thoughts to the families and people who have lost their homes across the State this afternoon.
I want to acknowledge the ongoing hard work of everyone from all agencies, including Fire and Rescue NSW, the NSW Rural Fire Service, NSW Ambulance, NSW SES and NSW Police Force, and the many other organisations who came together today across multiple fires, especially at Koolewong on the NSW Central Coast.
We saw agencies working shoulder to shoulder from our call centres right through to the frontline, doing everything they could in incredibly difficult conditions.
As I monitored the incident at Koolewong, what stood out was the complexity crews were dealing with before they even reached the fire itself. With properties nestled in bush, perched on steep terrain, dealing with downed trees on approach, their work was cut out for them before they got to the fire. But they pushed on.
Despite those efforts, homes were lost. That is a horrible reality for any family to face, and my thoughts are with everyone who’s been impacted tonight.
But I also know homes were saved, and that comes down to the skill, persistence and courage of the firefighters and emergency services working through those conditions.
Now, more than ever, it’s important that communities come together. I remember vividly how powerful that support was in previous years. Neighbours checking on neighbours, people quietly stepping up where they could, and local networks, including Facebook groups and community organisations, carrying each other through.
As we’ve seen today, being prepared and staying informed are critical to preventing property loss.
