For more than a decade, Bear Cottage’s Community Relations Manager, Bronwen has been the driving force behind the Christmas Gift Wrapping fundraiser at Westfield Warringah Mall, bringing together a community of volunteers united by a shared purpose.

What began as a seasonal fundraiser has become a cherished tradition. One volunteer joined as a school student and is still wrapping gifts 12 years later. A father and daughter return every Christmas Eve, while local shoppers often stop by and offer to lend a hand.

Last year alone, more than 150 volunteers raised a record-breaking $32,877. Now Bronwen has been nominated for the Westfield Local Heroes Awards.

Bronwen says the nomination belongs to every volunteer, donor and supporter who has helped make the fundraiser what it is today.

If successful, Bear Cottage will receive $20,000 to fund support and bereavement programs for parents, siblings and families.

Once upon a time, superheroes, princesses, wizards, and wild creatures roamed the halls of our hospitals…!

Stepping straight off the page and into our annual Book Week parade, patients, siblings and families dressed up as their favourite characters, filling the room with colour, creativity and imagination.

From classics to new favourites, and even some originals, every outfit came with a story, bringing a little extra magic to the day.

Book Week is a wonderful reminder that stories can take us anywhere, whether it’s a far away kingdom, an underwater adventure, or somewhere beyond the hospital walls.

A big thank you to Starlight Children's Foundation Australia for helping bring the fun and laughter, and for creating moments of joy for children and families during their hospital stay!

At just three months old, Bodhi began having seizures and was diagnosed with a rare and often-fatal genetic disorder.

Five months on, he's making medical history.

Bodhi has become the first person in the world to receive a precision medicine treatment for his devastating form of epilepsy, and the results have been extraordinary.

When he first arrived at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, Bodhi wasn't responding to conventional treatments and was losing developmental milestones. His worst day recorded 74 seizures.

Through Sydney Children's Hospitals Network's innovative therapies pathway, clinicians and researchers worked together to fast-track access to a potential treatment developed overseas, which showed positive outcomes in animal studies but had not yet been administered to a child or patient with epilepsy.

Bodhi received his first dose of treatment on 21 April. Just three days later, he had his final seizure.

"It took me and his dad 10 years to have a baby, and for my son now to be leading the way in this medication - I always knew he was special, but he's just proven that he's even more special than I could ever have imagined," says Bodhi's mum.

Meet our finalists from across the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network in the 2026 NSW Health Excellence in Nursing and Midwifery Awards.

Sarah Duncan, Registered Nurse, Oncology Inpatient Unit at Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick, is a Consumer Nominated Finalist for the Healing Heart Award.

Sarah focuses on getting to know each child and finding creative ways to connect with them throughout their care, including crocheting personalised animals in their favourite colours.

“These small moments of connection allow me to give my patients something that isn’t just about their diagnosis, but simply about being a child.

Phuong Phan, Clinical Nurse Consultant, Endocrinology at Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick, is a Nurse of the Year Finalist.

Phuong was drawn to nursing after seeing the care nurses provided to her own family. That experience changed her planned career path and led to a 20-year long journey across paediatric emergency care, diabetes research and education, and nursing leadership.

“Being there on what can be their worst day – supporting, advocating and teaching them through it – and then seeing them thrive, is a joy.”

The Cardiac Inpatient Unit, The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, is a Team of the Year Finalist.

Cardiac Nurse Manager Nicole Dinsmore says the nomination belongs to everyone in the team, a dedicated and inspiring group of people who give their all for the children and families in their care.

“They bring compassion, expertise and determination to even the most challenging situations.”

State of Origin magic lit up the Starlight Room as Laurie Daley dropped in with the iconic shield ✨💙

Patients and families were buzzing with excitement - taking photos, asking Laurie their best footy questions, collecting signed posters, and even getting the chance to hold the shield (which turned out to be much heavier than anyone expected!).

There were big smiles, lots of laughs, and plenty of unforgettable moments.

A huge thank you to Laurie Daley for bringing the footy spirit, and to Starlight Children's Foundation Australia for helping make the visit so much fun for the kids.

Four‑year‑old Sage was helping his grandmother make coffee for his mum on Mother’s Day when the coffee maker suddenly broke, leaving him with severe burns to his face and body.

Sage has since undergone seven operations, including skin grafts to 10% of his body, and continues his treatment and rehabilitation at our hospital months later.

“Children’s skin is very thin,” says Dr Torey Lawrence, Head of the Burns Unit at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. “Thin skin is very delicate and can burn a lot quicker and a lot deeper, and at lower temperatures.”

Already this year, almost 500 children have been treated for burns at our hospital — a reminder for parents and carers to take extra care around hot liquids and appliances. Close adult supervision remains the most effective way to prevent burns in children.

If a child suffers a burn, immediate first aid makes a huge difference:
💧 Cool the burn by running cool water over the area for 20 minutes.
👕 Gently take off clothing or jewellery near the burn if possible.
🚫 Avoid home remedies - no ice, creams, gels, toothpaste or butter.
🆘 Seek help: In an emergency call 000. For non‑urgent advice, call HealthDirect on 1800 022 222.
