During the early 1970's the Warringah Shire Council, prompted by calls from communities adjacent to beaches who had sand incessantly blowing into their streets and also covering the main Barrenjoey Road, commenced installing dunes planted out with marram grass at Avalon Beach, Newport and Mona Vale. These increased the slope of the beach but prevented the loss of sand into the streets and provided some protection for flatter suburbs directly facing the sea, such as at Newport, during storm events or king tides.

This striking image of an Australian soldier embodies the ANZAC legend of a handsome, square-jawed, and physically imposing man.

The ANZAC legend found its roots on Gallipoli, where journalists such as Ellis Ashmead-Bartlett cultivated a romantic image of the ANZACs based on the values of independence, mateship, equality, and a healthy disregard for authority.

Over the years, the ANZAC legend, propagated by the likes of historian Charles Bean flourished. Many Australians identified with the legend. It was what they wanted to be: bred in the bush, strong, resourceful, and independent.

The legend was one-dimensional, but attractive in its simplicity.

Yet by looking beyond the one-dimensional ANZAC legend, I believe we can see those everyday men who are truly deserving of our admiration.

We can see Bertram Byrnes, who forever wore a crooked smile after his face was shot away near Peronne. Although condemned to ‘slop food’ and a meagre pension, he always marched proudly on ANZAC Day.

We can see Joe Wood whose leg was amputated after being severely wounded at Ypres. Despite losing his leg, Joe always maintained his wicked sense of humour. Rather than wear his wooden leg, Joe used it as an umbrella stand, or hid it in his bed to scare the housekeeper.

We can see Herbert Foxton who was disfigured on the Somme when a shell exploded close to him. Despite undergoing 25 operations to fix his ‘smashed face’, Herbert returned to Australia, married his sweetheart Ruth, raised four children, and had 12 grandchildren.

Looking beyond the idealised version of an Australian (or New Zealand) soldier doesn’t diminish the ANZACs; rather it allows us to honour those ordinary men caught in extraordinary circumstances.
